YOU. HAVE. SOMETHING. WRONG. WITH. YOUR. CAR.

If it is even power loss like that, check the MAF, air filter, O2 sensor and Catalytic converter. If it seems different loss at different points, reset the e-shaft sensor, check coils, plugs, plug wires. If they are all good, get a compression check.

I can floor my 8, in 6th, from as low as 35mph and not get any bog down, and smooth solid acceleration all the way through 120+ where aero starts slowing down the acceleration rate.

Seriously.

I would love a taller 6th that is cruise only.

I have a 160 fwhp second gen RX-7 that is sitting at 3000 rpm at about 75 mph. It has no problems accelerating in 5th (I don't have 6th) and can quite easily hold that speed. In fact in 5th gear it can hold the car at 120 mph. To go faster I need to downshift to 4th and run the engine up to redline. That's where my car's speed limit is. It's at 9000 rpm in 4th gear. 5th is easily fine for the freeway. If your car in 6th gear, with an engine that makes more power, and at a higher rpm where it is capable of more power anyways has any problems at freeway speeds, you have one of two things going on. The first is that your engine has a serious problem and isn't making the power it should be. The second is that the speed limit where you live is somewhere around 130 mph.

I was joking about 7th gear.

I drive 75+ on all my highway driving. I have noticed that when the tach is around 3500-3700, acceleration even in 6th becomes a lot better, but then again, I don't NEED it to be better there, I would rather downshift if I need to accelerate quickly.

No nothing is wrong with the car... Every rotary I've ever owned required a downshift from overdrive to get any respectable acceleration in the 60mpg range. 4,000 RPM seems to be the magic mark where things start working.

The sole exception being my turbo II second gen rx7. The turbo had enough grunt to make a downshift from 5th unnecessary.

6th is already a cruising gear. It doesn't need to be any taller.

And furthermore, you say you run your car from 35mph in 6th? That would below 2,000 rpm. The engine is laughing at you too my friend.

Respectable is quite the subjective term. I find my acceleration in 6th gear at cursing speeds just 100% fine. Throughout my trips on the interstate, I never downshifted to make a pass or anything. It accelerated quite nicely.

You should get enough acceleration in 6th at that point. A cruise only gear would be fine. It's not that hard to down shift for passing.

I guess i call 'cruise level acceleration' good enough when i can accelerate faster than 90% of the other cars around me to obtain the next level of criise speed.

Fixed. no, seriously. Ill shoot video if you want. It's 1,750 rpm, and its still far better than even 3rd from most econo 4 bangers. Less than a second for 5mph gain increments, around 2 seconds to 60. In 6th. From 35mph.

Just the fact that. The only exception you gave is a higher power rotary points that out. It says that your 8 accelerates just as hard as cars known to have less hp/tq. Meaning your 8 isnt operating how it should.

I'd be delighted to see this video where you accelerate from 35mph to 60 in 2 seconds in 6th.

My 6th gear accelerates perfectly fine, never had any problems. Obviously its not BMW with 300 ft-lb of torque, but it is a rotary... You cant expect alot of acceleration from a car rated at 159 ft-lbs of torque in 6th gear, but thats what makes the 8 so much fun... Digging into that huge redline we have, psh its a waste if we dont use it, not many cars out there have that high of a redline. Downshift and go

Which btw the "magic point" is 5252 Rpms where maximum Torque is generated and crosses with HP, just a fyi...

I seriously doubt a stock 8 can achieve that.

2 seconds is quite extreme, but it's not like it takes half a minute. If I get time this weekend, I may just shoot it.

I hope that you do, because I would like to compare it to my car and see where I sit.

HAHAHAHAHAA!!!

The 8 can't go from 35-60 MPH in 2 seconds in 2nd gear, let alone 6th. It takes a stock rx-8 6.0 seconds to go 0-60 on a good day, and obviously it is faster during the first half when it is in 1st gear, so i would imagine it takes roughly 3 seconds to go 35-60 using 2nd gear, or possibly including the end of 1st. I would take a wild guess and say it takes about 8-10 seconds to go 35-60 in 6th in a non force fed 8. Probly more.

I will bet you my first born children and all the money i will ever make for the rest of my life that your statement is 100% BS. A Corvette z06 couldnt do that in 6th. 2 seconds from 35-60 would most likely require a car that can go 0-60 in about 4 flat....shifting at redline. I bet a bugatti veyron couldn't do it in 6th, although it may be semi close with 1000 torques.

Just one flaw I noticed in your statement. You say a "Z06 couldn't do that in 6th" and then you say "would most likely require a car that can go 0-60 in about 4 flat"

A newer Z06 can do 0-60 in 3.7 says Motor Trend Magazine. 3.7 is faster than 4 flat. I would think that a Z06 would "most likely" be able to do that then based off what you said, but you say no.

Are you saying then that 35-60 in 6th in 2 seconds would require a car that can do 0-60 in 4 flat, but that this isn't all that is required? Perhaps even more torque than a Z06 too since you point out the Bugatti's 1000 ft-lbs of torque.

Can you please enlighten us on what exactly is needed to achieve 35-60 mph in 2 seconds in 6th (top) gear?

wow, from 16x to 6th gear....

As for the cat talk, I hear Mazda have basically invented a cheap fairly indestructible cat. I guess basically to deal with rotaries....

NO no you missed the point. I am saying it would take a car that can go 0-60 in 4 seconds flat to go 35-60 in 2 seconds, using the lowest gear possible, so using 6th gear would be not even close. The Z06, although it apparently does 0-60 in less than 4 seconds whilst shifting at redline, it would be nowhere near that rate of acceleration using 6th gear, and an RX-8 would be even further off using 6th. That's all I'm saying.
