really?? I think NJ has the worst fines and the worst penalties when you get caught speeding. I mean they pound you with fines and surcharges.

My worst was 57 in a 35. Went to court got the violation changed from speeding to Unsafe driving, No Points, just a 550 dollar fine.

Cali wrote me a ticket for my tint last year (even though I live in Arizona). It was a $250 ticket, but the collections bumped it up to $1700. I don't see how they expect to collect on that.

My highest single ticket was $1800 (fleeing and eluding), but if you add the other 6 tickets on that one it was over $3k. By the time I was done with the lawyers and court costs, it was close to $10k.
Of course, that was over 20 years ago.

i got a 500$ ticket on my motorbike on my way to work this last summer. 140 in 100 zone (this is in canada) and unsafe lane changing. i went to the crown pros. to get it lowered and when he read what the cop wrote (which said i was straddling the line inbetween cars to pass six vehicles) i laughed and told him that was bullshit (which it was, id never do something that stupid) so he lowered it down to 300.

If I got caught doing 165 I'd keep driving, I can't imagine you thought they would be nice and give you a warning because you actually stopped. My two cents thats all.

I've actually had a cop tell me that he was shocked I stopped. Without skipping a beat I said "you want me to go" we both laughed, He told me to slow down.

@ Atilla? did they refuse to give you your car back, or you just never paid the impound fee?

I think my most expensive ticket was written for 70 in a 55 several years ago. I was doing more. I was driving my Toyota Tacoma at the time in eastern Washington headed to a gig in Boise, ID. It was less than $150.

I've been in a car (not driven by me) that was doing over 150 on a local Seattle freeway. It was a Lingenfelter 2001 Corvette. The driver was "showing me what it could do". We went from 60 to 150+ in nothing flat. Then back down to 60. That car is stupid fast.

Either:

$500 for 81 in an 80 (western Texas has them that high) is really really steep.

...or...

$500 for 81 in a 25 is quite the deal!

This isn't a particular story about me, but I'll put it up anyways:

So an anonymous 8 driver (no names here lol) was driving home and came across a souped up Hyundai Sonata (WTF sonata right? who DOES that?) got caught doing 125 in a 35 zone. Cop pulls him over, laughs at him and says "I can't believe you were racing a Hyundai." Compliments him on his 8 and tells him to slow down.

I don't know how he got away with going almost 100 over but he did...

needless to say, he smoked the ricer...

~$1500

Sportbike...45 zone ....clocked 118 on one wheel(though I was slowing down at that point). They clocked me with undercovers posing as construction survey crew. Come over a hill(at the speed limit) and there are 3 cop cars waiting for me.

Evening in jail, wife had to come bail me out(she was....pleased).

$1000 for the lawyer
$250 legal fees
$250 impound fees

Got off with no points and had to take a class. This was 7 or so years ago, no tickets since even though I drove/rode some very fast vehicles in that time. Just not as crazy as often on public roads anymore :P

About 4.5 years ago... Got caught by a sneaky bastard in a foggy night... I was going 75 in a 45. The cop was coming up behind me without his headlights on, and when he got close enough, he flashed everything at once... ticket was aound $230.
