Many of us have the same problem and there are a few threads already. Start reading here:

Break it in longer. Do some searches on break in period. For an 05--I think that you should have got a bit more off, but enjoy your vehicle!

You may be getting some incomplete burning which causes late firing and knocking - you can try tuning it, or changing gears does it still do this in 4th? I have found that a streight hard push is not as effective as release and push - you have to learn where the sweet spots are and work with the engine - more gas is not always better, and once you are up around the max go a little easier until you really get the feel of the car - that red line has a purpose - if its still not fast enough for you and no car ever is - consider turbo and other system for additional oxygen to get more complete burning - alternatively, the marble sound may be a disengangement mechanism - harmless but not to be fooled with...Any machine is breakable to why try to do it when it's still new?

im not tryin to break it. that was the 1st day i drove it hard like that. and no it doesnt do that in 4th, only from about 8k rpm to 9k aka redline in 3rd gear. and i am in no way purposely trying to be reckless, irresponsible or anything. this all adds to the fact that this is my first M/T vehicle and rotary. im just looking to my fellow rx-8 owners for advice. (so keep posting advice!!!) lol. and thanx 4 your advice Winfree.

I know exactly what this complaint is as I have experienced this myself. I found 2 issues concerning the 3rd gear high RPM power drop and or surge. First in states that use oxygenated fuel in the winter you may end up with this condition between the months of Dec thru March due to the alcohol blend. Second I discovered (before the flash was released a few months ago) that not enough oil is being injected into the cylinders at high RPM's which causes a loss of compression.

This is foreign to me. The car feels great in the 3 to 4 shift right up to cut off (9300 or 9500rpm - whoever you believe, usually 94mph). This also gets you closer on the next shift to the peak power range (7500rpm).

The guy who's shifting at 8000rpm for best acceleration is at odds with every test I've seen that got their times shifting at 9000rpm (usually 90mph). Never seen a test with shifts near the cut-off, but I'd suspect it would improve times.

Uh..It's hard to reply to someone who is so obviously retarded. His point to be made was that you are ABUSING a car BEFORE BREAKING IT IN PROPERLY.

Can you try to comprehend something before you post???? K THX BYE

Actually, if you read up on how torque and power-band works, aside from 1st and 2nd gear, to accelerate with maximum power you would want to shift at around 8200rpm. 8000rpm is a much easier goal, as you will probably be at 8200 by the time you have noticed and put your foot on that clutch pedal.
