Differential fluid never to be changed....

sounds crazy doesnt it....

this was stated at Mazda of Thousand Oaks in Southern California.

They said the transmission fluid service was $79.00 but thats it. They do not service Differential fluid.

anyone else here this?

mines been changed twice so far. 40,500 miles to date. Once when she had just a few thousand miles, and again at 30k.

you can buy the good stuff (like royal purple) diff and tranny fluids for almost nothing. Having someone pour it in your car for you (on a lift) will cost you $50-75 range.

What's the problem?

Check your owners manual to be certain but it's probably "rated" for 100,000 miles

My '06 owner's manual specifies the transmission and differential oil should be changed every 30,000 miles.

That dealer statement does sound crazy. If nothing else, why would they pass up an opportunity to sell a service?

In the old days (before FWD became dominant) people did not routinely change rear end oil. The level would get checked at oil changes, but just topped off. Was the guy at the dealer an old man?

It was a woman in the service dept who told me that...

she said she went to the service advisor, who said rx8 differential is never changed.

just gona go to tri-point and put royal purple in the tran/diff
however they quoted me $400 ish dollars which sounds a little high.<-- and thats me buying the royal purple.

heh. changing those fluids involves nothing more than removing a drain plug, letting it drain out, then pouring in new fluid. $400? Are they including a happy ending with that?

yeah tranny/diff oil change is a snap if you get the car on a lift, go to a local garage and pay them $20 to do it or something :P

speaking of which, methinks it's time to change mine again...

Hey, I live about 5min from the thousand oaks auto mall. Changing the tranny and differential oil is a piece of cake and can be easily done on jack stands. By chance do you go to moorpark college?

You think that is crazy? I've read some owners on this forum believe that Mazda's recommendation of no synthetic oil is the absolute truth. For a good laugh search for some oil threads

lol. unfortuneately im in Woodland Hills, CA.

yea Tri-point is usually a pretty good shop.. i think he misquoted me for a whole tune-up, eventhough thats still too much.

That's what my dealer said, in NY - you never change manual xmission fluid and never change rear diff fluid... I don't know much about changing fluids but I sure know about changing dealers ... or better yet, DIY.

well, I can tell you if you have an older car that has never had any fluids changed, changing them at 120k miles can cause you a lot of problems....

but for a newer car, there's no problem in changing the fluids.

I never change my engine oil as well ... since its gonna get burn off anyway ......

From the appearance of my factory oil when it drained out at 3800 miles, I would say they are clueless. Not to mention the shrapnel (sp?) on the megnetic drain plug. If you drive the car hard at all, it is a good idea to change to a better fluid after a few thousand miles of break-in just to get that crap out of there.

It's better that your dealer refused to change it, they'll probably leave out the crush washers. When the monkey they employ as a tech goes to remove the bolt, he'll throw out your old washers. Unfortunately, the dealer won't stock the washers (I know this for a fact!) and so when it comes time to put in the bolts he'll probably just do it sans washer.

Yeah, it came to the point that I won't let anyone work on the car unless I'm there watching it... I still get screwed but not as much...

haha, totally. I watch em like a hawk... even since my P.O.S. 94 probe GT.

i actually had to train my local carwash/oilchange spot to put in the right oil and hit the level without overfill.... 4 quart oil change is always an overfill.

why didn't you instantly go over to your car and grab your manual and show them the service schedule where it says to change the dif fluid?

oh thats right, you didnt know it was in there. because you hadn't read your manual yourself to be sure you understood what was called for.
