Why such a short 2006 run?

Maybe they figure it's time for all the 2004 and 2005 people to be thinking about tradeing theirs in. And so they will have a jump on them before they decide to buy something else.
Put the 2007 out and people will think it wont have the problems that the earlier ones did and trade up for the new one.
Personally I don't know why they are out now.

There is no talking of skipping a MY.
The main reason for the delay is capacity at the plant. They have pushed up the number of Mazda3 production due to demand and they also have had to increase production for the new MX-5 because of demand. and with production of the Mazdaspeed6 plus completion of the ramp up to CX-7 production and they dont have the capacity for RX-8 production. Plus they have more supply then they would like in the states.
So they pushed back production start until after the normal japanese winter breaks. Production to start in January with first ones hitting lots in March- early april. (no that is not the normal time for th efollowing year MY as someone suggested - check Mazda's previous track record.) All marketing materials and ordering etc is being done as MY 2006 and cars will be VIN'd as such.

could be that they just called it a year early because of all the TSB stuffon 04-06, such as the same reason for the 04-06 warranty extension. They may have already made changes, which they decided to incorporate into the new 07's, and quit bothering with the manufacuring of a product that will be subject to an extended warranty, not to mention any other issues that hadn't been covered between the 06-07 models.
Just a guess. Sounds logical to cut production of 06 almost a 1/2 year short. Heck my 05 wasn't shipped to it's dealership until 1/06.
