The shift throw is shorter. Yes the shifter itself is slightly shorter it's not enough to notice.

Not cheap, but I think the best mod for this car, at least on the rough bumpy hilly curvy mountain roads that I drive, would be super light weight wheels, rotors, and calipers.

BTW, I'm not sure I'm going to mod my commuter 8 or wait until there's a 16x 2-seater that would take better advantage of such expensive mods. This just seems to me to be the biggest weakness of this car. So I keep my Miata around--6.5 lb wheels.

Sigh.. All this love for the short shifter but I looked it up and it's $270!! What a disappointment.. Is there somewhere I could find it cheaper?

Seems akin to the $700 MS muffler.. WTF

I like to think I'm good at the "cheap mods"

I found a voodoo **** on ebay for 30 bucks shipped. I know you said you like the stock shift. I switch back and forth depending on the weather. The voodoo gets real hot in sunlight, but can be covered easily with a towel or something.
In the negative temps though... its like a tongue on a flagpole if you will....

I still prefer it to the stock shift ****, which I like - plus it "feels" like a shorter throw than the stock shifter.

Cosmetically - Rotary Rasps footwell lights are good cheap one. 50 bucks shipped to give your interior a new look.
I took my fenders vents off to be painted... stock vents plus 30 bucks to have them both painted. Makes the car look unique, but depends on what color car you have. Black vents on a black car didn't stand out enough for me.
Clear Corners are another cheap one.
Interior LEDs are another cheap way to enhance the look of the interior for under 50 bucks.

Engine: Pull the plastic airflow restrictors out of your stock air box and throw a K&N filter in there.
An oil catch can (if you need it / have an '04 or '05) is a functional mod that adds something to the engine bay.
Someone already said gutted stock cat/mid pipe. Good if you don't have to worry about emissions.

Suspension: F+R strut bars are easy to install. some are expensive, but if you're just looking for the look, you can find them both for around $150.

In closing though I have 2 thoughts:
1. None of these really add performance. HP gains for the 8 = big $.
2. You almost always get what you pay for.

My car was done on a budget.

Tein Springs - ebay 100 dollars shipped new
RP Resonated Midpipe - 160 shipped from a forum member here.
K&N V2 intake - 200 dollars new, got a discount from my company at kragens.
RX8Strakes eyelids - 30 bucks
Carbon Fiber ram air duct - 20 dollars.
And a buncha other random **** (interior neons, painted parts, painted emblems, tint, etc) $100-200 MAYBE.

The most expensive mod I have is my audio system.

2 10 inch JL subs - $3XX.00
JL Amp - $ 3XX.00
Rockford Fosgate Capacitor - $100.00
JL Wiring - $1XX.00
Rockford Fosgate LOC- $50.00
Lightwieght Subbox in trunk - $50.00
Custom Center Sub - $ a half hour with a dremel.

Thats not everything but itll give newbs ideas on how to mod tastefully on a budget.
