I kept my car on the "L" flash on purpose. Then I got a letter to get it flashed so I did. I did not have any problems with that flash except my fuel eco dropped from 23mpg to 15mpg. No biggie really. Then Mazda recalled the flash and had the dealers reflash all the cars they did with the letter flash. Now it floods like a Florida trailer park in huricane season every time I look at it.

That is not true. It is probably less than 3% who get that 12/17 mileage. There have been statistics compiled on this site regarding this topic. I started one trying to link mpg and VIN range (no success). THE BIG MAJORITY does get 20+ mpg.

I think you just want to stir trouble.

I averaged 20-24mpg, Except for a brief exception noted above. When it does start, it gets 20-24mpg again.

Holly thread resuration!! Yes, I would drive my car in second on the highway! 2nd gear is like driving an automatic. If you can roll all your stops and are only on the highway for less than a mile, second gear is your friend. And less clutch wear.

I've test driven the 8 three times. Each time before I started the car, the (same) salesman reminded me about the warm-up and shut-down. I already knew this because I've been reading these great boards for over a year, but I was impressed that he would do this. I'm meeting the same salesman at 6pm this Thursday, and will purchase an 8 if they'll give me more than a handful of beads for my '03 Mazda6s. Darn rebates have lowered trade-in values . . .

IT was 10 degrees here the other day and i havent had any problems with flooding yet. Although i do rev it 4000 rpm for about 5 seconds before i turn her off. That really helps... I just hope during the summer(when its 80 degrees) we dont have to go through the same process after we driven it for 15 mins.

I tested mine before I bought it. I "accidently" turned off the engine after the saleman pulled the car out of the parking space, and then restated it. I figured if it didn't start 1) I was in the right place, and 2) I'd at least know ahead of time what to expect.

I wish somebody would explain WHY the revving procedure helps. I'm not saying it doesn't -- just curious. You'd think it might have the opposite effect.

When you shut the engine off at a high RPM the fuel will be cut but the rotors will continue to spin and pump out any excess fuel.

Makes sense. Thanks!
No flooding issues so far (knock on aluminum).
