Angry What the HELL is with all the flooding/hard start threads?

Why are we all seeing at least 5 threads a day concerning flooding or hard starting? Who out there is telling people that the RX8 is prone to these symptoms?

Those who have had these problems are quite the minority in comparison to those who don't have the problems.

Ugh. yet another reason why new members shouldn't be allowed to start new threads.

True, they get repetitive and you feel like Bill Murray in "Ground Hog Day" living the same day over and over....

That said, I read through quite a few before, duh, I read the one where somebody said they turn the key and WAIT until the car "checks in" (the display lights up, the radio/cd comes on) before turning the key - no foot on the gas.

Well, from that day forward, that's how I start my 8 - and, WOW - you guys were right on - the car starts almost instantly now.

I'm glad for the "yet another hard starting thread" where I read that tip.

We should make a template... a MUST READ HERE FIRST, or something like that. Include ALL the best tips. Maybe sticky it. THEN there should be less threads. *fingers crossed*

my new rx-8 starts up about 1 second after turning the key, and it purrrs to life. I wonder if that's a hard start.

The flooding is something most people have never experienced before and if it happened 1 time to them that is enough to **** them off and they have to vent here. It really shouldn't happen at all but it does (apparently very little and most likely in the cold). I don't understand people who buy the 8 with no knowledge of the rotary engine. Possible floods are part of the fun .

Who Is telling people this??

In my case, 10 minutes after I wrote the check, the salesman say "oh the car floods real easy if you dont let it warm up, be carefull".

At the end of his Tour of the car He called over the Service Manager for me to meet, Her first words " remember this is a rotary engine, if you start it up it MUST run for 3-5 minute before you shut it off, or it will flood and need to be towed to the Dealer"

Then she gave these Examples, "if you back it out of the Garage to wash it and shut it down without the engine heating up, It will flood, and probably need to be towed here. or If you miss apply the clutch and stall the engine, and the engine hasnt fully warmed up it may flood and need to be towed here."

Why are we seeing these threads?

You have a lot of people that just bought a $30K car and are shocked at this information from the DEALER (the suposed MAZDA Experts). Not every RX-8 purchaser is a life long Rotary owner, they didnt know this ahead of time, so They come to the internet and search for answers: Is this true? Is it Common? Is there a fix? ect.

Now I do agree a search should be preformed to read about it before starting a new thread, I have only started one thread about an Issue that reviled no search hits.

I do feel the search button is a bit hidden, it blends into the heading too much, I was looking around the forum for 2 days before I found the search button, but that should be a new topic i think.

But this forum should be a place to Learn about this and other potential issues, Deterimine if they are real? if they are Common ? or are there any fixes for them.

The value of this forum is hurt by the relentless Flaming of anyone that says anything other than:

Ommm Ommm RX-8 RX-8 Thou are Great Ommm Ommm

As long as you're aware of the so called flooding problem, you should never flood it.

Every horror story I have read about flooding is from people that knew nothing of it ahead of time.

Don't read them? I have to sift through all the threads in forum WITHOUT reading them.

My dealer also clued me in to the shutdown procedure when I purchased the car last July, and have NEVER had a problem. NEVER.

But for some reason it has been blown WAY out of proportion, and the majority of the concerns come from newbies asking about the so-called flooding problem.

Heck, they wouldn't even have to do a search to find out about the shutdown procedure. All they would have to do is read the endless threads that already exist on the first page of the discussion forum.

I have a different problem. Somebody above had a similar problem but mine is on the other end. I have trouble not starting my car. My car seems to yell at me subconcously to start it and drive it at redline at least once every day if not a lot each day and to take the longest way possible as well as the windiest roads.

Re: Re: What the HELL is with all the flooding/hard start threads?

So would you rather the dealer not tell you?? I would personally want to know about it before it happens instead of finding out on my own. at least with them telling you you will know how to take care of it. It really isnt a very common problem but it does happen and as long as you know about it it wont happen, if you let it warm up. You also have ton rememebr this board is great for information but it is only about 1-2% of all rx8 owners, some board memebrs are not even rx8 owners just people trolling, others are rx8 owners that do not post very often they just read the info. I personally have had my car for 9 months now and I "Garage Park" every morning, to let my wife out of the driveway. I have never had a flooding problem. I just sit for a coupel minutesd and let it warm up before I turn it off. So just follow the instructions and everything should be fine!

No, but I would have preferred the dealer or some of the car reviewers to mention it, andother deficiencies, before I bought one so I could make an informed decision.

While it is a great car, I feel Mazda and the reviewers have gone out of thier way hide information and decieve.

In the end the truth will come out.

I'm sorry, but I do NOT buy anything without researching it first. That means you made an uninformed decision. If you relied upon men to fulfill your information needs... you are in for an unwelcome awakening! ha ha (Just become a woman.. and blame all men!)
(PSSST, decieve is 'deceive'... remember I before E, except after C) :D

You are missing my point, I did lots of research, I read a dozen reviews of the car, None of them mentioned any of this.

Perhaps they didnt know about the flooding yet.

And yes they mentioned poor mileage, but they said 17 city/24 Highway was poor mileage, not the 12 city/17 highway most of us are getting.

As for spelling who cares? Ive used a spell check for 20 years, but there isnt one here.

I never found this place till I was an owner, I used those unbiased places like:

Raod and track
car and driver
5th gear
Topgear
Edmunds
Car keys

Bottom line My real problem is the mileage, I have not had the flooding issue, but how can "engine of the year" have problems like this.

Those aren't unbiased... those are unexperienced!!
Engine of the Year was made easy! It is a rotary engine! As an engineer, or intelligent person, you should research the type. Growing up with a piston, you were told to change the oil every 3k miles, the higher you rev the worse the gas mileage, etc. All of these do not apply with a rotary. Rotary engines (as well as turbine engines) can be changed less often than 3k miles. and a piston does at least twice the work as a rotary for one revolution, hence more friction, etc.
These sources show they are used to one particular engine and none other!
P.S. I've never heard of Car Keys!
