they are NOT OIL FILTERS, they are OIL COOLERS. like the radiator. thats the only place they can be. they wouldnt be able to cool if they were placed elsewhere.

Tribal is right. That is one of the two oil coolers on the hi-performance engine (Manual). The automatic or standard engine has only one oil cooler. This is the oil filter, and where it is located.

On a rotary, the oil does a lot of the cooling work - it cools the inside of the rotors, and absorbs quite a bit of heat. Oil coolers are an absolute necessity.

I love this forum. I've learned so much about cars in general on here. When we walked outside this morning to go to work, I pointed that out to my husband and said "That's the oil cooler," like I knew that all along (I always read the boards before work). He just gave me a funny look.

Thanks guys, thanks for clearing this.

The oil filter as we know will need to be changed in every oil change. How about the oil cooler, in looks and feels very much like an 'air filters' does it require frequent cleaning or changing?

cheers

The oil cooler is a radiator for the oil, not any kind of filter or consumable item. While you flush coolant regularly, you don't change the radiator. Same goes for the oil coolers.

As Sputnik said, there is no flush necessary. However, I would periodically check to make sure there was nothing obstucting the air flow, ie. leaves, paper, bugs, etc. Also I would make sure that the air fins do not become bent or pinched together, which would also obstruct air flow to a point. Same things to watch out for on your radiator.
