TX thinking of buying a RX......

Hi,
New to the club,
Can any one tell me about rotary engines,
do you like them,
are they dependable,
expensive to work on?
any info would be very much appreciated!
Looking for a used model.......

Your asking a bunch of rotary enthusiasts if they like the engine in their car?
All of your questions have been answered already, I would bet my life on it.
Search and you will find all of them if your have the patience to read.

1. There not piston engines
2. Yes
3. Depends on the operator
4. No more than any other car
5. Searching and reading is your friend
6. I bought used (2005 with 13K miles) and have had zero issues and absolutly love my 8.

G/L - If you read the stickys at the top of each section you will learn a lot.

wow talk about being helpful when a person is about to buy a car that we love....

the 8 is not a 7

My opinion the 7 is a way better car, but i still own a 8. The 8 is an amazing drive

Not much power stock, really not that much power in almost all aftermarket. But the cars drive amazing.

As for dependability, I have had my 8 only a few months and the biggest problem I have come across is keeping it clean. But my 7 i have had only one problem the entire time i have owned it. (about 7 years)

The fuel economy is horrible, bout 200 miles a tank. (I live in a city) And consumes oil... this is not like a piston car where you can just change the oil when you need to, you have to keep an eye on your oil level. I check about every 3 days and often have to add oil once a week or every 10 days.

I Hope this will help, if you have any other questions please just ask.

and really just go test drive one... theres a reason its called zoom-zoom

Your clutch will snap between 40-50k miles, and you'll probably have no control over the A/C. Corners like a Matchbox, or... something. You'll do one mod and suddenly become an uncontrollable mod addict.

Well do you like driving a semi-rare car instead of being one of the crowd driving 350s or G35s or mustangs? Do you find thrill and enjoyment from driving a car that speaks to you, because it has a soul of it's own? Do you enjoy curves more than straight line?

If you answered yes to these, then you will love the 8. Don't test drive one until you are sure you can purchase it.

If you answered yes to some, no to others, then the 8 might work for you, and you need to do alot of research.

If you answered no to all of these, then please fix the URL in your search bar to http://www.rustang.com

That being said, if you like it and are seriously considering it, then go hunting for problems tha the 8 has. Seriously, find every problem you can, and the solution / fix for those problems. Seriously ask yourself if you are willing to deal with those issues or work to keep them from happening.

If you are willing, then go get a loan and start test driving 8s.

If you are not willing, then please avoid it, as we don't need anyone trashing the 8 for buying it before they knew what they were getting into.

Search. And Research. Meaning Search Again. Seriously. Watch iSpy. Dig through stickies and common threads. Read TSBs. Learn it first.

got mine used a month ago. 2004 6spd MT, 50k miles for 12k. I have to say the sound of the engine is mesmerizing. No piston engine is comparable. It hugs the road like your mother hugs you (doesnt let go). I know NOTHING about mechanics and I was able to change transmission/differential/engine oil with simple tools and a jack. I also was able to change coils/plugs/wires/air filter with my hands and simple tools. Its very easy to work on.

The car turns heads everywhere you go. The only things I dislike are:

1.I get like 12mpg and i drive 90% highway to work 170miles on a tank is not a lot. I was told you can do more before I bought it. Like 250-290 miles on a tank.

2. It vibrates a lot on idle which makes me paranoid thinking something is wrong.

Aside from that I can't be anymore pleased with this baby.

This car guarantees you minimum 2 car ***** a day.

Mine vibrates at idle too. When warming up it idles fine around 1000 rpm but after driving its under 1000 rpm and vibrates. Reading to see what the fix is. I just bought mine 2 weeks ago 2004 AT Lightning yellow 64k miles. I have a carfax which looks clean. I've been using premium only. May need to just change the plugs to see if that helps.

someone said its the engine mounts. Its fine when the car is cold. But when im stuck in traffic and on neutral i feel like im riding a vibrator on wheels. My shifter vibrates very noticeably.

I just changed my coils/plugs/wires tonight new K&N filter and cleaned MAF sensor (it was oily). Vibration is still there so I assume engine mounts are done. Gonna take it to the dealer and hope I can pass it on the extended warranty i bought with them.

Good Luck with yours let me know what happens.

Let's see, on just the same page on RX-8 Discussion that this thread was posted, I see 4 threads regarding MIAC issues, 1 thread on clutch issue, 3 threads on spark plugs/starting, 1 thread on xenon light level sensor, 1 thread on electric fan not working and 1 thread about a guy on his 3rd engine.

But yah, this car is just as reliable as any other car LMAO

Oops, yeah, everyone should make a new thread every single day that they don't have an issue, letting everyone know what issues they aren't having.

Awesome!

Is that what you are suggesting?

Just simply suggesting it's not as "reliable" as any other car.

Now, as "reliable" as any other sports car, maybe, but I personally don't think so.

Well, I had a Toyota Corolla, touted as one of the most reliable vehicles on the planet, blow an engine at 67,000 miles, covered under warranty. Sludging problem that was a recall for all of the same engines ~2 years later. However, my 8 runs perfectly fine at 51,000 miles, with my only 2 issues being condensation in the tailight and a broken heater control ****, neither of which should be considered to affect 'reliability'.

So if I was to take JUST my experience, the RX-8 is far more reliable than my Corolla was.

... sounds absurd doesn't it? Because it absurd. Why? Because I am taking a tiny slice of the population of each and applying it to the whole. Looking down the forum list where new owners come to post problems is hardly the entire pie. That is what I am saying. The Corolla forum boards (cringe...I just admitted that didn't I...) actually look just as thick with problems. Why? Because people don't post about what goes right, only what goes wrong.

I am not saying it's the most reliable.

I am saying that there isn't enough available data to be able to make anything more accurate than a wild *** guess. Which is hardly productive.

OP's post count is still 1, after more than a week. Probably not even watching this thread. I suspect everyone with the good posts is not thinking of him, but rather someone worthy who night come to this site and browse or search for information.

^True that! So, for future new owners, I have a 2004 with 62,000 relatively problem-free miles. I'd say maintenance is what can be expected for a sports car. And, even though the RX-8 isn't the fastest car I've owned (I modded an Evo VIII to 400 WHP and a Mazdaspeed 3), this is definately the sexiest and most fun car to drive. Take the good with the bad and you will absolutely love the RX8.

If you feel the RX-8 is a reliable car, then obviously you've had a good experience.

Maybe it's just me, but if a family member or a friend would come up and ask me if it's a reliable car, there's no way I can say it is with a straight face. That's just me.

I'm like a typical jealous husband on tv, love the car to death, but never had more paranoia in my life.
