Think My Motor Is Flooded

I went out to wash the car today and i was gonna start it up and move it onto the grass and it would have been the first start of the day. The car just keeps turning over and does not sound like it wants to start so after about 3 seconds of cranking i let off and wait about 10 min and try again. Still does the same thing. Does not want to start. What does a flooded motor mean? I have had other 2 stroke motors and crappy things flood before but you just wait a bit and it will start. What does this mean for the motor? and i hope mazda does not try to charge me for anything when it gets taken over there

well i called mazda and the tech said to hold tha gas down and crank it over for 10 seconds (which i read about in a searched post but i guess i did do it long enough) and then let off and crank again for like normal for 10 seconds and if it does not turn on i have to bring it in. He said i should hope it starts because there A LOT of rx-8 in right now for that problem, great. But i did that and it started i guess this will be a good searching post for the next time this happens to someone

probably not because there are hundreds of other threads on the exact same topic including the manual. a quick search would have turned up those others as well so this doesn't tell anyone anything new.

The factory DVD showed this too. Keep your gas pedal all the way down though. That cuts the fuel.

I did do a search actually, as stated in the above post. That brought up nothing that useful. I swear this site should just be shut down down and no one allowed to post anything. Then it would just be a database of info.

I think you're a bit offside with the site locking all the threads, but I totally agree with you on the search function for the site.
However I don't like to complain so I just keep editing my search until I find what I'm looking for....

so waht did you search? i typed in flooding, flooded, flood for titles only and received:

https://www.rx8club.com/search.php?searchid=2719680

oh, and by the way there's a sticky thread on it:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/engine-flooding-info-questions-17498/

and a DYI:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/easy-diy-flooding-112827/

i have been pretty easy on the noobs lately as has everyone else but you obviously didn't even try very hard.

rtfm (read the fuxking manual)

if you lost your printed manual for whatever the hell reason, download the manual from mazdausa.com and read it.

if you're too lazy to read the printed/downloaded manual, go perform a SEARCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now it seems that u deflood ur engine. Its a good time to bring it to a dealership cuz by doing so (hold gas pedal down for 10 seconds and crank) , you pretty much pushed all the unburned raw fuel mixture into your Catalyst Converter, so when you start ur car, woohoo, a roasted CAT might be ready to served !

So bring the car to dealership whenever u can, tell them ur car has flooded and u followed the *lame and stupid deflood process that Mazda recommended*, have them check the CAT.

I typed in deflood and I found several threads on it. Read a few and seems like the best way to deflood (if the Mazda deflood procedure doesn't work) is to push start it with the car in 2nd gear.

Push starts works if its a manual tranny

Push starts works if its a manual transmission, if its a auto you are SOL and have to get it towed to the dealership. What year is your RX-8? I thought that was fixed.

Another Newb to the forums here

Another newb to the forum speaking here, I think that there is such a vast amoutn of information on the site that you have to really spend a few minutes with the search feature some times to find what you are looking for if you are using semi-generic search terms.

My first post was about the cooling fan kicking in with the engine off, I read about it in the manual, I knew what it was, but I wasn't sure if it was a normal occurence or something that was a signal of a problem, I genuinely spent ten minutes after searching "Fan" and "Cooling Fan" and read a dozen threads unrelated to my question before posting. Then naturally, the thread I was looking for jumped right off the page at me. Anyhow, just saying, the search feature is useful, but there is just so much information that it is easy to get discouraged after about 20 unrelated threads.

for some topics, i can agree with you. you really have to know what you're searching for and refine it just right. however, there are certain topics that have sticky threads and have been discussed to death such as flooding that take two seconds to find info on. hence, the reason for the reply.

Sure

I wasn't being critical of anyone, just comiserating and trying to offer a little compassion. It's easy to get turned off to a board by making a mistake and getting beat down and scared off, there is so much good information here and so many knowledgable experienced people around this board I think it will be a valuable resource for RX-8Newb ( and me) just being friendly

I made the same error, of course the de-flooding procedure is well documented in the manual and on the DVD and in the quick tips guide, and, and.

Push starting sometimes works. Pull starting it works everytime. Yes this assumes you have a manual transmission. If it's an auto, you are SOL with this technique.

I have started many flooded rotaries this way. If it doesn't work, there is something else wrong. I've even started an engine this way that had a dead rotor. We had to get it up to about 40 mph in 2nd gear but it started! Horrible noise and the worst emissions I've ever had the misfortune of breathing. The windows wouldn't roll down anymore, there was an exhaust leak before the cat, and the shift boot was missing. The exhaust came straight in. I thought I was going to die. Luckily the sunroof opened and I could get my head out and still reach the steering wheel. Drove that car all of a 1/4 of a mile and it never ran again. Pulling works.

Mazda deflood procedure seems to work well especially if it’s just a minor flood. It’s saved me twice now. Once while in town and would have been impossible to find someplace to pull start it safely and legally. The other was at home I live on a farm and was about to go get a tractor to pull start it lol.

Sadly...get yourself a battery charger... and keep trying..after a few hours of trying to start it, charge it..repeat 10x or so.. it'll start...eventually.

What a piece of crap.
