I'm 17, and in October of 2004 I got my 8 as my first car.

My dad had taught me how to drive stickshift on his POS old BMW, and I loved it from day 1. I knew learning stick and learning how to drive in general at the same time was gonna be hard work, but I also knew that it would pay off in the end.

Needless to say, I still have my 8, and I still love it. Zero accidents, one speeding ticket, i dont think I'm doin too bad...

Yes, its a decently powerful RWD car, but it has made me a much better driver than I would be driving some crappy old car. If I lose control in the rain, I know how to quickly and easily regain control (and pull a pretty sweet drift).

The TCS helps, especially in the first few months as i was getting used to the car. After that, it started becoming an annoyance, and now, through some electrical modifications, i have it default to off, and I have to flip a toggle switch to turn it back on.

I htink it's a great first car. In the beginning, it is forgiving and easy to learn on, but as your driving skill increases, it is still a fun and enjoyable car to drive.

ou really want your first car to be something that you tell stories about. You want people to marvel at how inconceivable it is that you made it out of your early driving years alive. Stories of wheels falling off or having to open doors with screw drivers really build character. If you get an RX-8 your stories will be to the effect of "my first car felt very secure at high speeds and in sharp turns". BORING!
I have many stories I can tell

-burnouts in front of rival high school
-The mall security guard chasing after me n my friend after doing donuts in the parking lot of the mall
-Piling 6 (Yes! 6) people in my 8
-Totally owning my freind's shitty cars
-Totally owning ppl at school who talk trash about my car
-Blasting my subs until my German teacher came out and started yelling at us
-Drag racing in the school parking lot
-Late night runs to Taco Bell
-etc. etc.

That's awesome.

Glad to hear it's been good to you so far. I would be careful with this though...

No matter how good of a driver you think you are, there is no substitute for experience. To many good people have messed up there lives because of one tiny little mistake that could have been avoided.

...although, as long as you're 8's not silver....you should be OK.

^^^^ Nope, it's winning blue, no worries there :P

Some loser backed into my front bumper at the Home Depot (trailer hitch shaped indentation on the front), so I'm taking my car into the shop next week to get a Veilside D1-GT front bumper and side skirts. W00t!!!

Based on above post and things done in the RX-8 sounds just like why parents shouldn't buy cars for their kids, especially nice ones. Showing off, doing unsae things, and acting like an idiot and thinking it is hilarious. Total lack of appreciation and utter disrespect for the car, which you didn't purchase. Sorry, but you sound way to immature and irresponsible for a car, especially this one. I think your parents were pretty dumb to buy you one.

The only thing that qualified as even being amusing and not dangerous was the stereo thing.

Unfortunately, he's not kidding...

He makes it sound like he bought the car. Like right here, for example,

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...98#post1417998

But he's only received it from mom and pop. For good grades or something.

"newayz" I have to get back to work. You know? To pay of the car that I bought.

A car for good grades? That's ridiculous! That should be something you work for yourself and do anyway. What's wrong with people today? I got a small token gift if I got good grades, under $10, or my mom took me out for ice cream. I'm so fed up with all these whiny, spoiled brats with bad attitudes that act like they deserve everything there is without bothering to do anything real to get it.

For every kid I see getting things they don't deserve, I see 10 kids that have to remind everyone of how hard they've worked for everything as though they've done everything themselves. The fact you weren't born into poverty and had parents that didn't abandon you by the side of the road means you got more than some. Everything is relative.

All this kind of talk does is shame everyone into puffing out their chest to impress everyone with how they fought against the odds and worked hard for their success. I am not impressed.

I'll post this to all parents out there.

You can't disagree with the poster for wanting an 8. Hell, I would have loved it if someone bought my such a car when I was 16. Course, then again, I would probably be dead now.

No, this is for the parents with the means to laud their kids with nice cars. Bite the bullet, suck down you mis-placed pride, do the smart thing and get your kid a Volvo beater, period.

Sure, you'll have to put up with the bitching and the moaning, but at least your kid will still be alive to graduate high school!!!!!

Ok everyone saying that kids are all reckless and irresponsible your opinion doesnt seem valid because your stereotyping millions of teenagers. You all say how irresponsible we are and it seems you say this because you yourself once were and want to avoid a kids death which is honorable. And no actually ive worked my *** off the past 3 years and i am paying 18k towards a used rx8. So when you say daddy and mommy buy it thats also false. You say you buy your cars and pay your own insurance well thats hard and its impressive you can do that but some of us are in different situations so live and let live. You think we whant cars just to impress? you think we are all that materialistic? I whant a car i like that will please ME not to impress others. You guys have to stop stereotyping us we arent all mtv brainwashed people. My family included extended family have had decent fast cars as their first cars and yet we are still here. If you put a kid in a volvo beater who still whants to go 120 on the highway hes gonna die almost no matter what car you put them in. The advice should be responsibility like a lot of people on this board have said. For all the kids out their who are reckless im sure their are as many reckless adults.

Kickz.... i totally agree... an rx8 doesnt necessarily make a teenager want to go fast.. if you r gonna go fast, youre gonna go fast no matter what car your in... i agree with u 100%

I don't think all kids are irresponsible and many older people are. I am 56 and I know people who should not drive any car that are many ages.

which really is a good point...

saying that any one teenager is more prone to driving like a moron is no more true then picking any other person out of a crowd. To an extent, the likelihood may seem tipped towards teenagers due to the limited experience behind the wheel, but it really can be a toss up.

Experience does count for something though, so i could understand that part...but in the end, i just think that learning on a cheaper car will have you appriciating a really nice car a whole lot more once you work your way to it.

I agree with you a little there. You start out with the small things and work your way up to bigger and better things, more responsibilities. These are things that should be earned. It does give you far more appreciation for what you have and also for what others have. I don't know how somebody can truly appreciate what they have if they didn't have to truly work for it and earn it because then you are missing out on the most important lesson/experience of everything you had to put in to obtain it.

hmm i started off with a TL since my uncle gave it to me. i ended up crashing it doing stupid stuff. i regret now that i started off with a good car, because after i totalled it, i got myself a tc. im not saying its a bad car or anything, but it was far too weak compared to tl. so i worked my *** off and got myself an 8. :P
rx8 is my first manual car and im happy with it :D

Agreed. Especially when you have passengers riding with you AND especially when you have a "fast" car AND especially if you are male. It's just too tempting to seek thrills by driving fast or recklessly.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but statistics prove that very young and very old drivers are at-fault for many accidents. Insurance companies have all the research in the world that show this and their premiums are adjusted accordingly.

I know, I know, stereotypes suck. But they weren't created out of thin air, either.

Statistics also prove that 100% of marriages end in divorce or death, but people still do it.
