Auto RX8
Hi,
Planning to get a RX8 but not sure I can manage a manual one. Any (adverse) comments on the auto version ? Eg, heard that it heats up more in the auto version. Appreciate any feedback on this.

Tenor.. the big question: List down the reason why you want to buy an Rx8 vis a vis whatever is your 2nd or 3rd choice.
If the reasons you garner finger points to agility and speed over comfort.. Manual trans is for you..
My Auto8 is usually warm... but once a while... when white fluffy clouds drifting across the azure skies changes to a dark and stormy one.. it becomes a hot plate.

I drove manuals for 20 years and 'sweared' never to drive autos but somehow made the switch about ten years ago.
After ten years of auto driving and loving it; have no regrets what so ever. The 'take-off' is nearly always smoother in an auto and frankly have no reason to believe why an auto box is 'heatier' than a manual one.
Whichever you choose........you will ENJOY the 8.

Its strange. Its being offered in the states now. Maybe petrol is too ex in this region to offered a high powered 6AT.
I already felt a little short-changed off driving a 4AT when the 6AT is out this year.

Auto 6 speed from PI
All,
I'm very very interested to get a RX8 auto, went to PI recently and understand from them they have planned to bring in the Auto 6 speed, which should be here in Singapore around August.
Any idea what is the engine spec for this 6speed Auto?
Please advise whether is this true? Thanks!!

I feel that from Mazda's commercial pt of view, the 6spd auto is not sth that is destined for production in japan for quite a while (meaning years).
One cannot help but to want sth newer, bigger and more powerful. And then some may feel that JDM spec cars are better/purer than US spec...and it is a never-ending slippery slope.
So even if a US 6AT were brought over, others would say that a JDM would be better built and so on and so forth unto eternity. (An example wld be comparing the US Subaru WRX Sti to the JDM STi Spec C something or other) Personally, I just enjoy the 8 for what it is. And you will too.

dont be fooled. I was told in Nov 05 that the 6AT would arrive in Jan 06. Finally settled with the 6MT. Have not regreted my decision.
Dun worry Tenor, I'm sure you'll get the hang of driving the manual transmission!

ask urself wat u wan. plenty of mod options? as stock as it is? r u horsepower hungry? comfort city driving? or a stronger left leg?
Hearsay is normally wrong. Hear from the horse's mouth is most accurate. U can handle a manual, its just a matter of getting use to it. If not, how do u get ur singapore license, right?
Ask urself wat u wan in the car 1st. Ultimately u will be the one driving the car.
As for heating problem, yes, centre is hot. Not specific to the 4AT. 6MT, 5MT are juz as hot. However after remapping the ECU, the centre is so much cooler as compared to the past.

Since you drove both cars, you should have realise that the auto is easier to drive in the city with low end torque and auto gearing? Or you managed to redline 3 gears all the time in Sg?
Its all personal preference.

So I disagree with the premise that driving an auto is for pansies.... you auto drivers must eat ball-bearings for breakfast to do what they do with their 8 fast.

emporer... i said i had driven both.. i drove an auto once because my dad drove one home as a demo car... it was no comparison so i bought a silver 6 speed... u drive them both and u realize the 6 spd is much better

There are many more reasons to get the 8 in auto. Seriously if i wanted something sportier and faster i would have gotten a evo or a 350.
Having a manual does not make you a smarter or better driver or even a better person.
Please be sensitive and not so self-absorbed.
