Balderdash, he doesn't make a valid point at all. Concern over door dings is a reasonable concern which is easily ameliorated with just a little extra care in parking; concern over "a shitload of debris suddenly flies into your path and scratches up your bumper and hood" is utter nonsense, since this happens practically never and is about as likely to happen to anyone here as me winning the lottery, the Boston Globe coming out *against* a tax increase, or Ike buying an RX-8: yes, it can happen, and if you look hard enough you'll find the odd case where it does, but, rounding to whole numbers, its chance of happening is zero. Hurling personal insults at people hardly qualifies as a valid point (or is JeRKy a clinician qualified to diagnose obsessive-compulsive behavior?), it's just boorish and rude.

Chances of happening are zero? Maybe up there in bumblefuck Washington it's that low. Down here in Miami the chances of **** flying onto your car are more likely than you think, unless you want to do 55 and find your car's *** rear ended one day. There's **** flying all over the place on our highways. In fact the hood of my 8 was already struck by who-the-****-knows-what one day on 95, which produced 4 small scratches that went completely through the paint. And they are noticeable up close. Well...I guess that makes me a friggin lottery winner then, don't it? Plus we're talking about a car worth less than 30 grand, so I really couldn't give a **** about things like door dings and small scrathces anymore. That's how life is. Go read army's head-on collision thread and then you really might know what it's like to suffer loss instead of worrying about your precious little doors and fenders.

I wish we could all be like you and not be stupid enough to worry about small cosmetic damage to our vehicles. Oh, uhhh, hehem....

New York City here. Door dings are a part of life. Forget your bumpers too. Just replace bumpers and get PDR for the dings every couple of years. They're battle scars. Just enjoying the car... and loving it. Don't worry and be happy.

I have a used Door Defender when I used to care, but then I discovered how much more I can enjoy the car if I don't worry about the little things. Anybody wanna buy a used pair of Door Defenders (http://www.doordefender.com/)? I'll let go for $40 + shipping.

Well, I can't speak to Miami, never having driven there. But frigging SEATTLE is hardly bumblefuck, and what's more I've spent my life driving in NEW JERSEY and BOSTON, some of the most ridiculous driving places the country has to offer, and the stats remain this: *I* have never had "a shitload of debris" hit me, nor has anyone in my family, nor any of my friends, nor anyone I know. I got hit with a flying rock and scratched the hood of my 8 once, but I hardly consider that "a shitload of debris". It's a small rock. And that little rock was the ONLY debris I was ever hit with in a quarter century of driving. So maybe Miami is the hot-spot of FLYING DEBRIS EVERYWHERE!, but here on earth, it remains an extremely low-probability event. Less than 0.5% likely, which, as I said, rounding to whole numbers, is a probability of zero.

How long did it take to find an RX8 on Google earth? You might have too much time on your hands. I do appreciate the lat and long. Easier to check out.

I don't mean to belabor this diversion but I'd also like to point out that being made to feel guilty about worrying about a scratch because someone else was in an accident is faulty logic.

Should I really be eating so well when other people are starving? Should I really buy a $30,000 car when I could do with a fuel efficient $15,000 car and donate the difference to cancer research?

We have the capacity to worry about minor damage to our cars and empathize or even assist others who have been in serious accidents. In other words there is nothing wrong with doing both. That said, I take your point: If you get a ding, get it repaired and move on. It could be a great deal worse but there is no reason for people to feel guilty for worrying about their car.

Game for the extremely bored: What about a google Earth RX-8 hunt? Try to spot someone's car at work or home? Problem is it'd likely be covered.

This would also depend on how frequently the images are updated.

My own RX8 shows up on Google not once, but TWICE!

Here's the first one, by my old apartment:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=19...02511&t=k&om=1

It's the teeny-tiny red car in the center. I KNOW it's my car because that's exactly where I parked it every day, and I can tell by the open field next to it that it was a couple of years ago (now it's all new construction).

Here's the second:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...00339&t=k&om=1

It's the red car all by itself in the center of the frame. That's my old workplace, and that's where I parked every day.

Pretty awesome, huh?

By the way, in the first image, that parking spot was one of the few that didn't have cars right next to it. And in the second image, you can see I drove way the hell out of the way to not have to park by anyone else. DOOR DINGS ARE FOR SUCKERS!

In the second image, why didn't you park in the next row in front of yours? The whole bank is empty, meaning there's 1 good parking spot in the right-most location. I only park in the right-most spot. As you are currently parked, you're waiting to get owned by a car door from both sides.

Nah, for two years it served me well. No one ever parked next to me, except one single time.

Now I work somewhere else.
