Letter direct from Mazda Corp:
"This letter is to confirm that your 2009 Mazda RX8 required replacement of the engine, due to a miss from the #1 rotor. If an engine replacement is necessary for the Mazda RX8, the dealership will remove the engine from the car and ship it to our re manufacturing facility located in Virginia. This facility disassembles the engine and reassembles them with new rotor housings, seals, gaskets and any other parts needed to maintain high quality and longevity to OEM specifications. The 2009 Mazda RX8 engine received substantial internal upgrands, and this engine is not compatible with 2004-2008 RX8 engines. Because of this, there are no remanufactured engines in stock for this car. Mazda of Japan has supplied the remanufacturing facility with "seed stock" engines. These engines are brand new engines from the assembly plant in Japan. Our remanufacturing facility installs a remanufactured tag on the engine, but the engine you received for your is brand new.
I apologize for the delay, and the repairs required on your car so early in your ownership. I sincerely hope that this new engine will provide many trouble free miles in the future. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact John Hine Mazda, or myself.
Regards,
Paul Woolley

SO - I did NOTHING to cause my engine to fail. For those of you who do not believe me, that is fine, but I know what I have gone through. The odor you smell must be that of something "Splatting" on your face.

1. They don't have re-man Series 2's yet, so I do not know why a Dealer would say this BS.
2. Yep, my Brand New Spare Series 2 engine had a reman plate/sticker on it, BUT the engine is ALL brand new and from Japan, the Silver and Blue Plate/Sticker is for Identification Purposes of the New Short Engine itself and put on in the US Virginia plant.
But yes, it sounds as if you got a dud, very rare as yours is the only one of three that I know of which have so far been replaced, yours, one in New Zealand and one in USA which had the sump ripped out and owner continued to drive car cooking the engine.
Good Luck.

So check this crap out!!! So the dealership calls me today and says yes they did get the engine in they ordered from the company. The company they ordered it from had to go to auction to buy an RX8 so they could pull the engine and send to my dealership. SOOOO.....it comes in today and they start looking it over to find out that the crank wont turn...its locked up!!! So they got their money reimbursed and ordered another engine from another company and it should be here Monday or Tuesday at the latest. They have my engine out and tranny dropped so when it comes in they can stab it in the same day and get me on the road in time to make the Texas8 when I leave out Thursday. I am REALLY hoping it comes in...cause if it doesnt then the trip is blown for me This will be the 4th engine they have ordered.

Are you still under 8 year 100K Miles warranty?
If so, everything said above IS complete crap..
Mazda and their Dealers in NA use re-manufacture under warranty from plant in Virginia, they do not Auction to buy ANYTHING, or Remove from second hand RX-8's.
I am guessing you are privately paying for your engine replacement??

I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma. No, I am not still under the 100k warranty...the car shows to have 108k on it. The dealership I bought it from is not a Mazda dealership. Its a used car lot. So the warranty I bought is through them and the car has to be taken to them. I am not paying for the engine replacement, its covered under the extended warranty I bought when I purchased the car.

My extended warranty is not through Mazda...its through the dealership I bought the car from and only warranties at that dealership. They are getting me another used engine, they said they will not get me a manufactured refurb. I dont know what to do at this point but take what I am given. This is my 4th or 5th engine through this whole ordeal of bad engines received and blown...just want my car back and running right. The car has 108k on it so any Mazda warranty is gone.

So after another 1600 miles, it went back into the shop because the new transmission had issues with 3rd gear. I think they fixed it, but after speaking to the spouse, we decided we were done. After getting 10 mpg, constant mechanical problems, and other things - I traded it in on a Nissan. I don't have a sports car anymore, but I don't think I will have any more problems either.

Ok well I have the car back, on the 5th engine now, but I think there is an issue with an exhaust leak now at the engine...so now they are going to look at that on Wednesday as well as why they cant seem to fix the A/C and heat not working! I swear if they ever get this right, I will have a brand new car from all the crap they jimmy rig!!! No offense to anyone here named Jimmy lol.

For Kd92103. Sorry to hear about all your troubles.
Yes there have been numerous reports of transmission problems with the newer transmission in the '09. Popping out of gear, not going into gear etc. This was not widely reported. but it seems going to the newer transmission with its shorter gearing and different gear pattern, they have run into quality and design problems. Many, many trannies replaced. sometimes more than once on the same RX8. There were far, far fewer tranny problems in the 2004-2008 models.
All Mazda RX8 and Miata trannies are built by the same Japanese company, but are NOT actually built by Mazda itself.
Sorry to lose you to the RX8 ownership group, but I understand your decision. Whatever the next RX car is, Mazda has got to get these reliability issues solved for the sake of those of us who love our RXs.

I had 8000 miles on my 2009 RX8 and just had the engine, transmission, water pump, coils and clutch plate replace in mine. They tried to give me a "rebuilt" engine until I threw a fit and they manage to find brand new everything. The dealership tried to tell me this never happens. WHAT EVER. I have had 10 Mazda's and this is my last.
