Putting a 6 speed in reverse

Hey so first of all I must be an idiot because I cannot figure out how to put the car in reverse. I just bought it today and watched the dealer back it into a spot so I know it goes into reverse. Is there a trick to it? I feel through all the gears and can only feel 6 when I try to go further to the right then down to hit the reverse gear it wont budge. Its feels as if its not there. Again sorry for the dumb question.

You basically PUSH DOWN on the the ****, move it to the right and then pull it down. It's like shifting to Gear 6 while pushing straight down on the ****.

It's funny, my friend drives a Volkswagon GTi and he's used to putting it in reverse by doing the exact opposite. It took him a while to figure out how to put my car in reverse, it was quite amusing watching him struggle.

The reverse gear in the RX8 is cut-gear and they should always line up correctly with the synchromesh. Try putting it into third gear and try again.

The gearbox shouldn't make any noise. Make sure your clutch is all the way down , (double clutching if needed), push down and slide it into reverse with a smooth movement...you shouldn't have to force it.

Some people find it hard to re-adjust to a new car, and the rotary engine is no different but the gearbox would have to be one of the best around.

If all else fails I suggest you've got a problem with the gearbox and you should have it checked out ASAP by your local Mazda service centre.

No problem, the reverse stumps a lot of people, including me.

You are a noob, so don't worry about it. I'm more concerned because you don't have a manual or didn't think to go look there. If you don't have one, go download one from www.mazdausa.com

don't worry, my father who's been driving stick for years first did not know how to put this car in reverse. He said it took him atleast 15 minutes in the parking lot to actually finally get it in reverse

Always try to put it in reverse before you start to move, say like on a hill.

It didn't catch me off guard.. the VW I bought back in 2004 had me trained.

But me being me, I still get absentminded sometimes and put it into 6th and try to back up. Obviously that doesn't do much.

The car jockeys at the dealership have problems with this too. I watched the kid try to get the short shifter into reverse about 5 minutes before I went over and took it away from him. I was having sympathy pains for the tranny.

The lot was at a slight angle so he could of let it roll backwards if he had thought of it.
