Putting a 6 speed in reverse

Hey so first of all I must be an idiot because I cannot figure out how to put the car in reverse. I just bought it today and watched the dealer back it into a spot so I know it goes into reverse. Is there a trick to it? I feel through all the gears and can only feel 6 when I try to go further to the right then down to hit the reverse gear it wont budge. Its feels as if its not there. Again sorry for the dumb question.

You basically PUSH DOWN on the the knob, move it to the right and then pull it down. It's like shifting to Gear 6 while pushing straight down on the knob.

Cody Red 08-19-2007 01:32 AM

yeah, push down and put it in 6th.

It's funny, my friend drives a Volkswagon GTi and he's used to putting it in reverse by doing the exact opposite. It took him a while to figure out how to put my car in reverse, it was quite amusing watching him struggle.

The reverse gear in the RX8 is cut-gear and they should always line up correctly with the synchromesh. Try putting it into third gear and try again.

The gearbox shouldn't make any noise. Make sure your clutch is all the way down , (double clutching if needed), push down and slide it into reverse with a smooth movement...you shouldn't have to force it.

Some people find it hard to re-adjust to a new car, and the rotary engine is no different but the gearbox would have to be one of the best around.

If all else fails I suggest you've got a problem with the gearbox and you should have it checked out ASAP by your local Mazda service centre.

No problem, the reverse stumps a lot of people, including me.

You are a noob, so don't worry about it. I'm more concerned because you don't have a manual or didn't think to go look there. If you don't have one, go download one from www.mazdausa.com

rowteree 08-19-2007 07:59 AM

don't worry, my father who's been driving stick for years first did not know how to put this car in reverse. He said it took him atleast 15 minutes in the parking lot to actually finally get it in reverse

4me2 08-19-2007 09:11 AM

Always try to put it in reverse before you start to move, say like on a hill.

heyarnold69 08-19-2007 09:21 AM

Rems31 08-19-2007 09:38 AM

Next time try the user manual.

kvndoom 08-19-2007 10:12 AM

It didn't catch me off guard.. the VW I bought back in 2004 had me trained.

But me being me, I still get absentminded sometimes and put it into 6th and try to back up. Obviously that doesn't do much. :banghead:

Brettus 08-19-2007 10:22 AM

You mean that R on the knob is for reverse ?
I thought it meant "racing" $$%^$#$%#$%%^ !!!!!!!

DOMINION 08-19-2007 04:19 PM

rddragoness 08-19-2007 04:39 PM

MrCairo 08-20-2007 12:11 AM

he he - I had the same problem when I picked up my 8 from the dealership. They never showed me how to put the darn thing in reverse so I kept going forward in 6th. I finally figured it out after about 5 min of looking stupid

SayNoToPistons 08-20-2007 01:27 AM

 . Put it in Neutral and push the car backwards.

05rx8mazda 08-20-2007 01:43 PM

same thing happened to me

hahah the same thing happened to me lol I parked it in the garage n i couldnt back it out we had to push it out and we drove it back to the dealer but yea you have to push it down and put it as if you were shifting into 6th gear

np bro, the first day i got my 8 i had to ask a random guy walking in the parking lot how to get it into reverse...couldnt get it out of the parking space =/

and sometimes i still have a problem getting it in to reverse...even though i push down i guess sometimes i just dont get in the right gear

jeffe19007 08-20-2007 02:28 PM

The car jockeys at the dealership have problems with this too. I watched the kid try to get the short shifter into reverse about 5 minutes before I went over and took it away from him. I was having sympathy pains for the tranny.

The lot was at a slight angle so he could of let it roll backwards if he had thought of it.
