Purchasing a used RX8
Purchasing a used RX8
Well, as you can see I'm new here, so I've got a few questions about buying a used RX8. Right now I'm planing on trying to find a manual(stick shift) 2005.
What prices should I expect to see?
Would a 2004 be a bad idea?
Mileage.. do you experience any problems at regular intervals (I.E. is 40k too much)?
Where should I look for this car? (I've currently only really looked at carmax, I'm not too sure i want to buy from them but time will tell.. or maybe you can help)
Thanks a bunch.
Opie.

Shock and Awe
I have an 04 that I purchased in Aug 03 about 52000 miles ago, and I have had no major issues at all. Just steer clear of the early ATs and you wont have anything to lose sleep over.
Also, list your location on your profile. It would be easier to give you expected prices that way.

There is a for sale forum here. You have to figure if they post on this site they probably took pretty good care of their car.
Personally I'd stay away from an 04, but opinions vary. They may be fine but why chance it if you can afford an 05 or 06 anyway?

Power!!
The 04's are almost out of warranty. That would be the only reason to not go with an '04 in my mind. Getting the remainder of the warranty will allow you to cover any problems you find in case the previous owner didn't take care of any little annoying thing that might be wrong.
I have an '04 and it's been a great car but I've also gotten all the TSB's and recall work done on it before my warranty ran out. I have 54K miles and it runs as strong and as smooth as the day I bought it.
Don't get an Auto before '06. After '06 you get the high power motor (like the manual) and a 6 speed trans.

Is there a huge difference in power from 04 to 06 for AT's? I didn't even know they did a different motor, just the new 6 speed AT.

I'm just out our for sale section and base your price offers on that, I cannot give you an exact number to offer as every model is different (options, year, mileage, etc.)

for another comparison I got my 04 6 speed with 17,000 miles for $20,000, and that was in dec of 2005. 40,000 miles and $19,000 is alot, i'd offer 15k or 14k for it.

I just purchased an '05 RX-8 Shinka edition in Washington for $25,5, talked down from $26,5. This was a fair price for the car consider the great condition that it's in. The previous owner took extremely good care of it and only put 13,000 miles on the engine... I've put 500 miles on it in just the last 3 days. Filled up the tank twice.
The dealer kept it in the showroom since they day they got it, so it didn't get test driven much. Plus its Mazda certified with warranty, road-side assistance, etc. The same dealer had an AS-IS '06 for exactly the same price, but it wasn't even half as nice as the Shinka.
I definitely could have found a cheaper RX-8 in the area, but I couldn't find another Shinka that matched this quality. This car is show-room quality.
Anyway, hopefully that gives you a good upper-bound to shoot for.

I saw that you posted that today, you said the warranty is almost out? My Dealership just told me today that mine is and now that I'm having all these CEL problems I'm going to have to pay for them =(
