Thumbs up

When my now-fiance and I saw the yellow RX8 at the Detroit Auto Show in January, she said she'd let me buy one if a child seat could fit in the back. Of course, we've all seen the pictures of the matching seat!! We're getting married in July 2003, so I'm thinking Spring 2004 for an RX8 Purchase.

I currently own an Escape. So does she. One SUV is PLENTY, thank you!!

I plan on buying a RX-8 as soon as they hit the showroom floor. I was curious as to that date though. On every RX-8 site that I have been on, it says "2004 RX-8", not 2003....?

think the rumor of it not coming out 'til 2004 is because they are going to call it a 2004 model, same as they did with the mpv, bring it out after the new year starts for the rest of the line uo and badge it for the following year. makes it look like they launced next years car really early
fro m me in an earlier post:D

I am definitely buying mine the day they arrive at my local. I'm supposedly number one on "the list". Already have a monster down payment set aside, and gave away my Jeep last month. Getting a POS to get me to work in the meantime. The waiting is definitely hard. Just returned from OEF (again), I go back to the office next Monday, but no car yet. If I wasn't so fanatical about rotaries, I'd consider just getting an A4 Quattro or a WRX right now. But I know I'll be glad I waited when I get into it for the first time.

I'm a new guy here, but thought I'd put my angle in. I have a 2000 Miata SE that I really like, but I a new Rx-8 would be my fifth new rotary car (hence the nick) I drove through the '80s in '81, 83, '85, and '88 Rx-7s, all of which were the most reliable and satisfying cars I ever owned. Well, then I got the Miata. Its a very different beast, but I love it and will not even consider trading it for an Rx-8. If my budget allows, however, I might be convinced to try the '8 as an addition to my stable. Personally, I have no need for a four-seat car, and would rather have a layout like the '7 with a hatch for big stuff. Maybe I should wait for that...

Sitting on the Sidelines Initially

I do intend to purchase this car at some point, but I plan to wait at least a year, maybe two, to actually purchase. I have found it is usually a good idea to wait when a brand new model is released, especially with an unproven engine. Waiting will also give the hype a chance to die down and any initial quality problems to get sorted out. Case in point, my wife wanted to get the new Jeep Liberty when it came out last summer, but we decided to see how the reliable the cars turned out to be. Sure enough, there were some issues. DC got their act together, fixed the problems and I believe our Liberty is a much better car than the original models off the production line.

I would love to get one right away...

I really, really want one. But there's no way I'll be able to afford it new before 2006. I want to support Mazda for making what will hopefully be one of the coolest cars on the road, but with a house, cars, and eventually kids, an extra car payment + insurance payment is too much.

I bought my first new car last year, a 2001 Chevy Impala (comfy, roomy, good gas mileage, handles fine in snow, great safety rating, by no stretch of anyone's imagination fun to drive). I owe $17,000 on the loan, and the book value of my car is $12,500. Learned my lesson... for a front wheel or all wheel drive car, I'll never buy new again.

If the RX-8 positively rocks, costs less than $30,000 with the options I want, has a respectable safety rating, and doesn't lose 40% of its purchase value in the first year (like my !@#$%^& sedan), I'll buy one once I'm done paying off my Chevy. If it doesn't, I'm going have to wait until one of the first year buyers dumps his Rx-8 for a Mazdaspeed Rx-8 and buy his old one.

Now, I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that price gouging was illegal in Canada. You may want to double check that, but I'm pretty sure you should be able to get the car for at most MSRP. I know things are a little different in the States though.

The RX-8 is the only new car I'd ever purchase.

I'm inclined to agree... I've not yet found another car I'd even concider spending nearly this amount of money on.

S2000 came close, but there's just a few imperfections for my environment/situation.

about price gouging...

I'd asked about gouging to some of my Kanuk cohorts here, but we never really came to any conclusion.

The dealership I went to offers the car at MSRP for those who put a deposit. The vendor said though that if I were to make a walk in purchase, that it would be more.

Im not sure if price gouging means "selling at higher that MSRP" but if it does, then Canada is DEFINITELY not immune to it, cause I've been to alot of dealerships and found that they offered the car at higher, which cripples negociations, cause everyone knows that when you start higher... you end higher

BUT YOU COULD REALLY HELP OUT A BRUTHA :

is gouging illegeal in Canada? if so that would mean some (many)dealers aren't playing it straight, and believe me, nothing would make me happier than calling the Better Business Bureau and dropping a few well chosen names... so please, anyone with info about the legalities of slashing a consumer's wallet share with us here.

IS PRICE GOUGING ILLEGAL IN CANADA?

Neither dealer I emailed even replied... which is odd since I'm undoubtedly going to spend a lot of money with one of them... probably the one that replies first with some information on when they will know more about availability and when I could put a deposit if necessary.

It varies from province to province, but I believe that it is illegal in Ontario to price gouge.
