I asked the people at the Mazda Dealership if it was possible and they said it was not for a 2004 model. However on Instagram someone with a 2004 RX8 did have one and said the people at his dealership told him the same thing. I was wondering how you can make the switchblade key work out for the 2004 model.

 

well when you look it up in the parts catalog it doesn't show the flip key for 2004, but it does work, you just have to buy the key and remote, and have them program it.

If you search the forum, there are at least two DIYs. You should have started with searching before hand... Here are mine below:

 

short answer yes, but again a search would easily and quickly result in your answer as well as very specific instructions on where to find them, what to look for, and how to code it. I suggest you proceed to searching because theres at least one thread with extensive information and discussion over many people getting this working.

The only tough part of this is finding a place that will cut the key for you. Most places when you walk in asking for a coded key to be cut they assume your evil and are trying to steal someones car.

 

I checked on getting a second switchblade key for the 05 I just bought, local Mazda dealer said 500.00 bucks!
Do they think they are Harley Davidson, or Mercedes?

 

If the key fobs will sync & the key will program with the IDS then yes.

 

i just did it with mine, i had the remote, new key was ~$40, coding took about a half an hour, works great
