Over revved the motor

Anonomyous:

I was going about 72 when I downshifted to second. Before, I knew it the rev buzzer went off and I pushed the clutch pedal back down and found the right gear (4th). No problems yet, but must have gone over 10K.

I changed the fluid to synthetic right after I got the car new. My Xr4ti taught me that the fluid is the most important part in the transmission after being rebuilt twice in the first 80K.

If you rev too high you will hit the rev limiter and the fuel will cut off and you will go in limp mode and only beable to drive around 20mph.

That didn't happen so don't worry about it.

It is a whole different matter than a combustion derived over-rev.....

The pressures are a whole lot higher when that happens........

He is talking about having to rebuild the engine in his Merkur XR4Ti. I think he's on his first RX8 engine.

How did you like the Merkur?

The Merkur was great, but a little soft. It was the tranny that gave out, in particular the shaft bearing. After reading the factory bulletin that specified the $16 a quart fluid, all problems stopped.

The 626 that I had at the time felt a little more stable at speed.

The thing is that since the motor was being over revved by the momentum, the fuel cut out did not slow me down. But it did not go into limp mode, so I am OK?

If it didn't break at the time...you should be golden

The engine is balanced OK free spinning to 13K at least....when you add compression pressures...you would have been F**Ked

Ive done this to mine a couple times, the last time I did it I pussed out half way on letting off the clutch and hesitated with it half way down then let off which was stupid of me; I toasted my clutch, my car smelled like a burnt clutch that whole night and now it feels like it has alot less pressure so I probably need a new clutch.......dammit

Hey if he survived a Merkur's problems then he can survive anything that will go wrong with an 8 although it's 8's it's the engine to worry and with Merkurs it was anything and everything attached to the main block. My friend is on his 5th Merkur he says once you catch the Merkur bug you can't get away from them.

Yeah, I feel kind of funny just checking the oil when I am under the hood of the RX8. The Merkur and I were a lot more intimate. Air conditioning hoses, radiator, batteries (right over the turbo), dipstick (it really didn't take 6 quarts!), water pump, belts, hoses, etc...

Funny thing is that they both get 19 MPG, go figure.

It can rev to 50k, at least.

The 1.3 rotary can get up 12.5 k without damage. I think at 13k, it will be destroyed by "harmonic distortion"...or a gremlin.
