So the people who are getting mileage in the low teens have all the updated flashes?

If so, was there some 'hardware' change made to the 05 and 06 models?

I've never seen a car that seemed to have a greater deviation is mileage between owners.

05 late model 5 spd driven normally with periods of spirited driving (20% of the time) 11.5 mpg all city driving all the time and my Mazda service manager told me this was normal. Rat Bastard.

PS Ike....I use to think you were a putz but I have to admit your humor is growing on me.

Pretty steady 20MPG around town. I don't baby it, but I also don't ride for long periods with the RPMs way up either. Rev it up high, shift it, move on.

If you want 60 mpg, REALLY bad acceleration(10.5 0-60), and an understanding of what really is a slow car.

Here ya go. It's cute - "Demented and Sad but kinda Social"
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/motoring/br..._roadster.html

For everyone else I think we understand we bought a Sports car that eats oil and High test gas. Why on earth would you shift at 4k? It makes no sense! Snap out of it MAN!

If i get 4-5 mpg less for having FUN while driving, Ill gladly fill my tank 50 miles earlier than the guy( or girl, bunny ) who shifts early and never really enjoys his commute. For me the cost:benifit is wayyyyy in my favor.
I dont see how anyone can justify buying this car then complaining about mileage.
You got 21mpg on you last 3 tanks? YAY FOR YOU!!! I got 16mpg and got everywhere twice as fast, I WIN.

Win what?

Maybe most won't agree, but I don't need to be redline shifting all the time or weaving in and out of traffic to 'enjoy' my commute. I normally set the cruise control and still manage to 'enjoy' my 150mi commute (round trip) - as much as a commute can be considered enjoyable. The RX-8 is enjoyable to me all the time - that's why I got it.

As far as the difference in gas mileage, could the difference in gasoline blends between states play a role as well as the type of driving you do?

I maybe hit redline twice in a month... that doesnt mean I shift at 3k all the time either. I drive how I feel, fast, slow, cruising, weaving, w.e. feels right. My point is I cant stand these guys who never drive the car above 5k, count miles and gas all day long, and still only get another 45-60 miles out of their tank.
What the hell good is an extra 45-60 miles if your not enjoying them?
Thats what I mean by I win.

Definitely agree. The 8 loves to rev and if you don't take advantage of that aspect of the car, you bought the wrong car.

Remember, BunnyGirl's car is new. Might be why she's holding back right now.

i shifted @ 3200 for an entire tank and got about 16mpg.

normal (60 city/40 hwy) ... shifts around 4-6K... (about 5 times per tank i take it to redline)... 14mpg

2 mpg difference for shifting like a pansy?!

18,000 on the clock

take ur 21mpg and be happy.

Like I always said, Id much rather only get 190 miles out of my tank and evjoy every one of them than get 240 miles and not enjoy any of them.

Yay for 21mpg and a pulse of a coma patient! I like my heart to race along with my car.

I have an 04 Jetta GLI (the wife's) and at the moment an 03 Mustang GT (magazine project car). In the Jetta, I can cruise on the freeway at 85 mph and garner 30 MPG average for the entire tank, something like 350 miles. Or, conversely, I can drive in town like a granny,
taking it easy as I accelerate, and that stupid little turbo motor will suck it down at an average of 15.5 MPG! If I ROMP on the gas (way fun witha turbo BTW) I think I can average about 11 MPG!

Don't even ask me about romping it in the Mustang... by the time the tires have stopped spinning, its time to fill it up again!

I just filled up my new RX-8 for the third time, and got right at 19 mpg this time, all city miles.

It goes up every tankful as the engine gets broken in. I just now passed the 700-mile mark.

Maybe next fill-up, it'll hit 20 mpg.

I've done two tanks now and have gotten 19.4 and 18.73. On that last tank, however, I got stuck in traffic, lucky if I moved 5 miles in 45 minutes. Boy, that was fun. Apparently everyone forgot they were supposed to be driving because there were two other cars on the side of the road.

Right now I have been doing 50/50 driving.

I just got a notice from the DMV that apparently they approved my BNY GRL plates so I should have them in a few more weeks and can start driving to work so I will be able to see how I do on 90% highway driving.

I've been doing a lot of 1,2,6 shifting so I can enjoy first and second and then not get a ticket by going directly in 6th and cruising around and enjoying the nice weather. I've been getting some nice gas mileage on my third tank.

Damn it pulls nice in 3rd at 6 to 9 thousand rpm though.

With gasoline expected to cross $3.00 or $3.25 per gallon this summer, it ain't done to death yet.

Exxon's ex-CEO was just granted a 650 billion dollar compensation package for his past years of service.

Yay!

heh heh, good comeback. I like it.

You must admit though - whatever the cost of petrol (sorry - gas), you either can tolerate the 8's milage or you can't. I really don't see how whinging about it changes much (unless you're a fan of group therapy).

Thanks. And I'm in complete agreement - "if you can't afford the gas, you can't afford the car." Buy electric.
