My RX-8 Is Abnormal (Warning - Another Mileage Thread - Yay!)

My manual transmission RX-8 is quite abnormal.

I have now passed 3,200 miles.

It took a while, because I drove my Jeep in the Winter (for the most part).

Anyways, I am now quite sure of my mileage.

Around the 3,100 mile mark, I had filled the tank from a 'light on' condition 11 times.

My mileage, based on the amount of fuel used to refill, is averaging a hair above 21 mpg.

This is surprising and significant to me after reading all the threads/posts from people - so surprising, that I double checked my fuel log.

Driving has been about 40% highway and 60% city.

Should I tell Mazda my RX-8 is defective?

Yes. You should also tell the admin of this board to remove your thread starting privileges.

I get 18 to 19 mpg consistently, have only 2400 miles on my 05 manual. My driving has more city than yours so your figures seem about right. I usually shift around 4500 rpm but from time to time I do wind it up just for the hell of it.

I followed the break in instructions religiously, but have driven normally since then. I'm very relieved to be getting about 280 miles per 13 gallons.

BunnyGirl 04-10-2006 03:21 PM

I got 227 miles with 11.7 gallons to refill, so 19.4 MPG on my first tank in 50/50 traffic and one of my trips stuck in heavy stop and go rush hour traffic (more sitting than moving), plus stalling numerous times getting used to the clutch (rush hour traffic helped with that LOL). I have only driven about 18 miles on my second tank of gas, so I don't know how it's doing yet.

I'll be interested to see how I do when I can start taking it to work regularly (don't have parking privileges yet without having a license plate to register with security) in about 90% highway. Thinking I'll break 20, which is basically what I was hoping to get.

djseto 04-10-2006 03:44 PM

I've gotten 24 mpg before. whoopty do.

Hmmm, that's funny, because one month ago, you were consistently getting 18mpg. Now it's 21? Let me refresh your memory: https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=189

05 model?

Animagix 04-10-2006 04:25 PM

i kinda wonder why there are so many 8s that differ from each other. considering the cars are similarly spec'd, from the same region, similar driving habits... why are some 8s getting more mileage over others?

djseto 04-10-2006 05:07 PM

I bet the issue is 90% driver related. Different people, different styles, different definitions of their styles.

Nope. I've checked and double checked every receipt for fuel and my mileage log.

I've averaged 13.24 gallons between fillups and I've gotten an average of 282 miles per tank.

Just for clarification...your post 1 month ago was a lie, but what you posted here today is the truth?

I was guestimating when I said that originally.

When I crunch the numbers, I am happy to report I underestimated my mileage.

Somewhat like you underestimating how truly ugly the Subaru WRX is when you signed on the dotted line and bought yours.

What are the break in instructions you followed?

That works out to less than 15 MPG.

Roto, you are averaging 21.5 MPG, which is absolutely amazing for the mixture of driving you do. If you do the math, take 60% of the miles, and 60% of the average gallons, and average that way, you get 21.5 MPG. Whats the issue again?

I wasn't actually complaining, abbid.

I'm somewhat surprised at how good my mileage is after reading what a lot of people are getting here.

NoTears316 04-10-2006 07:08 PM

220 miles per 13 gallons: 16-ish miles per gallon

For outstanding achievement in getting mediocre gas mileage, driving like a pansy, and opening another stupid gas mileage thread...

8_is_enuf 04-10-2006 08:32 PM

I get over 20 MPG pretty much ever tank now. I no longer feel the need in stomping the gas as I pull away from every stop light.

I agree - 99% of the the mileage problem is the driver. I can drive hard and get as low as 15 if I choose to.

newcastle 04-10-2006 08:38 PM

Heavy foot, all street, 13g fill up = 180 miles

Nopstnz 04-10-2006 08:56 PM

Drive very hard most of the time, mostly city driving, and around 18-19 mpg.
