Certain posters (poster?) in this thread, who shall remain nameless, seem to be bit jealous of this guy. Give the man a break, my parents leased me an '04 Rx-8 and I'm not a pompous spoiled brat. Quit looking for every opportunity to label him as something he may not be. Yes, it sucks you had to work to buy your own car as a kid, but face it, some are born into privilege and others are not, and neither situation necessitates a particular personality. I'm not being a dick, i'm just sticking up for this guy because I feel he's been wrongly harrassed when asking a simple, innocent question.

The manual transmission you won't want to use would be something like the three-speed, column-mounted shifter on the old Ford pickup I used to drive. Now that was a pain to drive; heavy clutch, sloppy shift linkage, worn syncros--but it got me around until I could afford to replace it.

Actually it DOESN'T suck that most of us did have to work our a$$es of to buy our first, second and every other car after that. I am verry proud of it and it made me apreciate it that much more. Yet I find NO fault in the fact that this kid is gettin an RX8 from his parents. If they can afford it, and they think he deserves it, go for it.

I'm not saying that I would do the same for MY kids. It's their kid and if they have other means of showing him the value of working and earning your things, he might as well enjoy his RX8.

Hell, I think if he's already gotten an RX300 out of them and that hassent spoiled him, he might as well get a Ferrari. The damage is eather allready done or it's not going to happen.

If everyone threw the word "deserve" out of their lexicon, we'd all be better off. He may have, in his parents opinion, EARNED an 8 (or any other reward) for something he's done - good grades, quit jerking off in public, etc. Too many people feel they deserve things; and it's usually not the case.

I guess my orignal message wasn't really targetted at you then (I used anonymous to avoid finger pointing). I understand the satisfaction derived from purchasing something with your own hard earned money, although I haven't yet had the opportunity to earn enough cash to purchase something of great importance. That will come when I finish undergraduate school (something else my parents pay for) and earn my MBA (also something my parents are sponsoring). However, my parents have still instilled work ethics in me through other means (sports, religion, and mentoring), and I have no problem working hard to earn something valuable. Heck, I'm going to graduate at least summa *** laude from a very respectable school next year and I take much pride in that. All I'm trying to get across is "don't judge a book by its cover", or in this case "don't judge a kid by his vehicle", and don't be jealous, it makes you look like a jerk. A few guys need to leave the thread and quit feeding off of each other's retarded insults.

You know what's weird? I think I appreciated things I got from my folks more than things I buy for myself.

I remember being so excited and taking such great care of my crappy 1977 Monte Carlo (bought in 1988 for $1,500) my folks got me and being very appreciative.

Now that I can afford nice things - I almost take it for granted. Not that I abuse my 8 or anything - but the fact I paid for it doesn't make me appreciate it any more.

What's fun is being able to buy stuff for your folks - things that they might have always wanted but were putting off because they were supporting you.... Things that they never thought of doing....There is a solid satisfaction in taking care of them - Got Mom her first computer when she turned 90. (Mouse use was a fight!) Took her to Hawaii - as Cargo - on A C-130 and she loved it. Flew her in a helicopter over San Francisco Bay. Took her to the volcanic mud baths at Calistoga. Let her pick out her own lobster dinner in Monterey, and for her 94th birthday got her the 8 and then took her to her first car rally. Don't knock kids getting good stuff from their parents, just let them remember their parents when they start turning back into kids!

You hit the nail on the head. I got a beater when I turned 16 and it was greatly appreciated. Others got cars I still can't afford, and appreciated it less. Values can be taught regardless of affluence. Which is why I think you're wasting your time even acknowledging the BS.

perhaps the 8 is not the car for you at this time. start out with a FWD car first? then get a RWD car.

plus if this is going to be your first car... be prepared. majority of first car drivers tend to get into a lot of knicks/dents/fender beders/accidents....

my first car from my parents was a 95 honda accord that they bought... crashed that one into a damn deer with no where for me to go... so i split the cost on the second car with my folks a 00' V6 honda accord... help paid it off and sold it and i bought the 8 with my own money, to be honest, i appreciate this car a lot more because it is 100% my own money spent on it.

if you do get the 8, get an MT... but if you're not going to get an MT 8... then dont even bother with the 8, until you are ready, pick another car then.

I think you are using the word "jealous" out of context. If you actually read any of the negative posts, you will find that most of them aren't related to him being given a car. They pertain to him beng given a car, and then crapping on it because it wasnt exactly what he wanted. The whole idea is ridiculous. Yeah, my parents are giving me a $30k car, but it sucks because its not what I wanted. Freaking deal with it! It isnt the fact that people are jealous, they simply realize that he is such a spoiled brat that he cant accept it as a gift and appreciate it for what it is. Of course I can understand you accepting your own theory that everyone is jealous because you seem to be in the same boat. You get what you want and I'm sure you dont actually appreciate what is given to you. Instead of simply saying, "thanks", people like you say, "but what else can I get?"

GEEZ. All I was stating is tat I find NO fault in the fact that he is getting the car. And that he seems not to be spoiled about it. He has kept a verry cool head about getting rational arguments to support his case in order to convince his dad.

Some of us (myself included) flame people that buy the car without informing him or herself about it and then go bitching about it not beeing what they wanted. Here we have a kid tat is getting an 8, and was NOT saying "if it's not MT i dont want that pice of shi..." He was simply asking for advice on how to state rationally and with valid arguments: "Hey MT will be a better purchase than AT"

And BTW if I read the replies correctly some of the advice that was given to him actually helped so:
gotdilbert: If you get the MT please let us know. I for one would be glad for you. Even when if you where my kid, (be glad for that im POOR) you wouldn't be getting an 8 ;-)

You're absolutely right, I've never said thanks for a single damn thing I've ever received. I'm so ungrateful that when my parents bought me a yacht I got pissed and sunk it when they refused to throw in a complimentary slot in the local marina (/end sarcasm). Really though, you're only making yourself look bad when you reach so hard, based on harmless statements, to make generalizations about someone you've never met. I've yet to find a post where gotdilbert says his car will suck if it's an AT the car will be a piece of ****. Find where he says that please, I'm dying to see it. Btw, no one ever admits to being jealous and I wasn't expecting you to do so either.

Thanks guys, the thing is that he did not choose the RX8 specifically. He set a budget of 30k (with destination and tax), and I had to pick out a car that fit those criteria. He had a few criteria of his own, from most important to least important:

1. Safety
2. Auto Trans
3. Reliability

I'm not trying to sound bratty but in the area I live in most kids drive BMWs, I'm not trying to claim I don't want to fit in. But its mostly the fun to drive factor I want this car, not for the showing off factor. We still have a few cars for consideration this weekend, we're probably going to test drive the Impreza WRX. He says that the Evo and STi I can't get because of bad safety. So anyways if you guys have cars that fit this criteria let me know

I prefer for the car to be RWD or AWD if possible also.
