Manual

I know how to drive stick, and I'm about to buy a new RX8, but my dad doesn't want me to get a manual. He knows that I know how to drive it but he still doesn't want me getting one. How can I convince him to let me buy a manual? I don't want the auto.

NgoRX8 07-23-2006 03:47 PM

it'll help if he has a reason for not wanting to you get it.

BlueEyes 07-23-2006 03:52 PM

Tell him driving a manual requires more attention than a slush box, meaning you can't be chatting on cell phones, eating burgers and doing your makeup. You'll be more focused...or something.

Raptor2k 07-23-2006 03:54 PM

Why doesn't he want you getting one?

gomoses 07-23-2006 03:54 PM

Yeah, that's a good one. I hardly ever use my cell phone anymore - I pretty much can't. And I can't tinker with the radio as much (although the steering wheel controls let me get around it) - so that's a good excuse as well.

SayNoToPistons 07-23-2006 03:56 PM

ask daddy to get you a 1989 civic.

NoTears316 07-23-2006 04:01 PM

Maybe you should just be thankful that your daddy is getting you a new car.

gotdilbert 07-23-2006 04:01 PM

Cause he thinks it'll distract me.

When you buy something with your own money do you always consult with daddy? Your dad must be buying it otherwise i'm sure you would care less.
Your getting an auto enjoy :yelrotflm

gotdilbert 07-23-2006 04:17 PM

Yes he's buying it for me but I'm going to be driving it so I don't see why not.

shakRpahX8 07-23-2006 04:26 PM

How in the world driving stick is going to distract your driving?!

LIES!! On a different note. The Auto's are MUCH more prone to "dead engines" and the like. That's a damn good reason..

MazdaTed 07-23-2006 04:28 PM

Ive actually been more distracted by the fact that I was driving an auto, It was gross when I stuck my hand in my passangers drink (trying to shift).

NgoRX8 07-23-2006 04:37 PM

^

WhiteDealershipRice 07-23-2006 04:52 PM

Manual tranny's get better MPG, Keep you more focused on the task of driving (as oposed to cellphone/eating on the car/carressing the girlfriend...) and tend to be more durable in the long run (you tend to know they are having trouble long before any catastrophic faliure occurs as oposed to the slushboxes, which run fine until they die on you with little or no warning leaving you stranded)

However, daddy might be more worried that you'll be doing the stuff we all did when we were young and stupid, (racing evrything to include our own shadow/ attempting to drift on public roads in traffic burnouts in evry stoplight etc...)
since he's already getting you a sports car an auto might discourage you from doing too much stupidity on it (or that's what he is probably hoping) since MT's have the reputation of encouraging more spirited driving.

Present the logical arguments to him and he might budge, but if he is the one ultimately making the purchase, you're at his mercy... whatever you do maintain a composed and mature attitude while talking to him.

Stavesacre21 07-23-2006 04:56 PM

Agreed with the others...just tell him of fact that the engine seems to have a few more problems in the auto...and that the auto and manual DO NOT have the same engine in them. Their getting slightly closer and closer though...so that excuse might not last much longer. :banghead:

On the other hand, if dad buys it for you, just be happy regaurdless of transmission. Most of us were handed down a 10-15 year old beater.

just more $0.02

I already told him about the engine. I'll also tell him how it'll focus me on driving more. Any scientific studies? :)

SayNoToPistons 07-23-2006 09:49 PM

no. its your daddy's decision.

what the BLUETOOTH is for my friend, I shift and can still talk....

gotdilbert 07-23-2006 09:57 PM

So anyone else have luck convincing their parents to get a manual for them?

Phantom 4 Door 07-23-2006 09:58 PM

you can start a manual if your battery dies...you can control the car better if it starts slipping because you can give it more power or less power depending on the situation, downgearing can help you brake faster

Nope, but when I was a kid, my parents convinced me to get a job to pay for a car.

gotdilbert 07-23-2006 10:21 PM

That'll take forever.

SayNoToPistons 07-23-2006 10:28 PM

well what does that make you? a spoiled brat. you know who you remind me of? that "fat ass" on south park. "but mommmyyyyy! i want ittttt!!! arghhhh!!" . most of us didnt get rx8's or anything like that! we got freaking hand me downs.

Razz1 07-23-2006 10:30 PM

maybe where he lives doesn't warrant a stick due to traffic conditions, like LA
