What I have found is this: the engine loves to rev, and driving under 2800 rpms seems to use MORE fuel. I have been driving at all speeds trying to keep the rpms between 2800 - 3100, this appears to give (my car) the best economy, that is until I get on it. I have noticed that ONE TICK (line) on the fuel guage = 10 miles to get 15 mpg, if I get 12 miles per tick I get 16-17 mpg. I had gotten almost 15 miles per tick and got 20 mpg.

Also I noticed keeping the rpms between 2800-3100 greatly reduces the carbon residue on the tailpipes. Has anyone else noticed this?

Hey, no need to flame anyone. Granted, I wouldn't be able to stay at 3000 rpm either (doesn't that amount to only 60 mph in 6th gear?), but his finding *is interesting*, to me at least.

About your comment on the Prius; I've stated on a different thread before that it is possible to build cars that are futuristic in terms of fuel economy AND are fun.

There are people who drive a lot of miles. I do 100 miles a day just to get to work. If I had a 13 mpg tiny RX-8, I'd raise hell at the dealership. As someone else said, with 13 mpg, I want a 500 hp Viper.
I'm lucky, my Mazda gets me 19-21, just barely tolerable.

Chill - I did this on a hunch. I drive to work at 05:00 on 45 mph roads, speeding (much over 60 ) is not an option. The police are all over the place. I tested the RPM range because the RX-8 is rated at 24 highway right? and that testing is done by the EPA - Right? and at 55 mph in 6th gear is roughly 2800 rpms (or close to it) Right? So I figured if I kept the RPMS in the HIGHWAY rpm range (but going at legal speeds) would I, Could I get 24 mpg, and the answer is NO.

FYI I do not drive like a granny, it was just a test. Helps keep me awake on the 30 mile drive.

No flame really, and I think the new Prius is pretty nice for relatively sedate ciy/suburban driving. It sounded like you were so focused on MPtick and all, not so much the rest of our nice car.

I also did a test of sorts this last week. Went upcountry NH on relatively quiet morning. Normal mileage here w/small trips 10-20 miles is 18mpg, this trip was 23.3mpg for 200+ miles, PDC to 24mpg advertized I'd say.

In fact my light normally comes on plus/minus 250m, this time at fill I was at 3/4 and it was 266miles !! Did some redlines, mostly 50-70 mph for long stretches, wasn't really paying attention to that.

Not bad, and it totally surprised me, I'd thought maybe 20. With no fun, it might even get 24+

I'f I drive speed limit on the turnpike here in FL (70MPH) for my cruise to work (about 39 miles) I get as high as 26MPG. My everyday city driving with traffic and AC (mandatory most of the time in FL), I get a low of 16 and a high of 19 (pure city, no highway).

Not as good as the 30+ on my Neon, but then again, this aint no Neon :D

Most of my driving is from stoplight to stoplight, with a brief 4 mile run on a highway (that's when I let er rip) I love to hear that ever so faint chime. Almost all of my driving is with the A/C on, and you know what? The RX-8 does not feel any more powerful with A/C off than with it on. Some cars feel much stronger with the A/C off, but not the '8', it pretty much feels the same.

Anyway, the engine appears to run better when it is revving rather than loafing.

Got my 8 July 15, 03. My average MPG has been 15.9. VIN is 101604. MPG has been getting better with miles, I now have 2400. I really expect better mileage in line with the EPA estimates. Let's hope something shows up in our data sharing.

I'm just under 2000 miles. Had to add about a quarter quart of oil because the oil light indicator came on and stayed on. The oil on the dip stick was only 1/3 of the way down.
