I am an idiot
I've had my RX-8 for a year. I've kept the exterior in pretty good shape except a couple of dings in my passenger side door (I immediately started parking in a different spot because of those). Not as nice as some of the cars here, but in better shape than most 1 year-old cars.
I park my car outside of the garage. But I enter through the garage because I'm too lazy to take a key out and prefer to use the garage door opener.
Last night, I got home from work late. As always, I opened the garage door with the remote as I drove up the driveway. I parked the car went into the garage, and closed the garage door.
This morning, I opened the garage door. I noticed that my car was remarkably close to the garage. But I thought nothing of it, and got what I needed from the garage. I went back out later to actually leave, when I thought to myself, "damn, this car is really close to where the garage would have been." So I took a closer look. Yep, I closed the garage door on the nose of my car.
There are scratch marks. But worse, there there is a chunk taken out of the car. A small chunk to be sure. But very noticeable.
The ironic thing--I never park that close to the garage. I normally park a lot closer to the street, but I wanted to park closer because my car was getting wet from my lawn sprinklers. To avoid my car getting wet, I chopped off a piece of my car!
I can't understate how stupid I feel for closing the garage on my car. And I have no idea how much it will cost to fix or if my insurance company will even fix it.
I'll post pics later.

At least it happened out of your sight -- I opened my hood while the windshield wiper arms were in the way. Now that felt stupid. Hope your damage is easily fixed...

We've all done things that weren't the smartest. That does not make one an idiot. Doing the same thing again would make one an idiot. Be kind to yourself, get the car fixed, and move on. They are called accidents for a good reason.

So the garage space is reserved for your Ferrari and thats why your RX-8 is parked outside?
Sorry to hear of your mishap. It's not that bad. You can now debadge the front when you get it repaired.

Ouch! I hate it when I do something like that. Your down deep so you need to get that fixed soon. You don't want it to start rusting. Good luck and let us see the her fixed up.
Did that with both of mine. No damage the second time. I cussed myself for 15 min. Both times done when trying to dry under the hood after a wash. :o

Sounds like a great time to get a body kit Shouldn't be too bad, I had to replace my bumper, it cost me about $600. See if you can find one that was hit in the rear & buy the bumper cover off of a junk yard, or get it repainted. That doesn't look like it would be too much work, but I doubt it will be notable enough to turn into your insurance company. The deductible will most likely eat most of the cost - and at that point you might as well just keep the record clean

Dad did that to my SUV, cept it was worse. He opened the back then closed the garage door down. Needlessly to say the back was all scratched up with 2 parallel cuts that are about 8 inches long. It was so bad that the garage door got stuck while closing and I had to crawl through a window to get inside the garage.

Hey, I feel you buddy. I've done something just as careless, but the opposite. I Backed out of my garage one morning....only to find out I had forgotten to open the garage door! Made 3 bar-dents on my rear bumper.

If there was an award for doing the most dumbest thing to our cars, I'd probably win first place. I was doing my own tint for my aftermarket sunroof since it didn't come with a sunscreen. There wasn't a flat surface anywhere that I could use so I thought maybe I'd cut the film on my trunk. I padded it down with about 5 paper towels just to make sure there were no scratches. I made the incision with a box cutter, a couple of them too, and sure enough, it went through every single goddamn layer of the paper towels. And now my trunk looks like it's been attacked by Wolverine
