just over 13,500 on my 04

I will be the first one to admit that I have babied this car. When I do drive it I drive it like it is meant to be driven. My maintenance is done by season and not by miles. The oil has been changed at least 10 times and tires rotated twice. The car is paid for in 5 months and I do intend to drive it more in order to take advantage of the extended warranty. With it being paid for I will be in a better financial situation to pay for any high cost repair issues. Plan to keep the car and give it to my son when I die.

Right on dude. You're really passionate, sounds like my plan! Long live rotaries (esp. 100k+ ones )!

Thanks for giving us an update. Do you pre-mix? Can you provide us some info on your maintenance history?

Oil change once every 4-7k miles (I know I know, but I'm on a tight budget), keep air in tires... Normal stuff. I do drive it pretty hard... No premix and normaly I run 87 octane (regular gas in California) but recently started putting in 91 octane (premium gas in Cali). Great car, very reliable so far. It's made 2 1,000+ mile trips with no issues and a few couple hundred+ mile trips with no issues...

Thanks for the info. It takes points and questions necessity of pre-mix, and the luck of the draw for engines. Keep us updated!

I feel sorry for you! First, Kaka isn't close to what he was a few years ago. He's very much on the decline, if you watch last year's AC Milan games and this year's Real Madrid games closely. Second, when you're at under 50,000 miles, you're even more paranoid that your engine might break down at any time.

100k+ with no pre-mix and 93 octane. The engine was in tremendous shape but needed renesis rotors for my 3 rotor build.

Did you buy new? If so please let us know your cars history, year, type of driving, how long did plugs last, coils, parts used. Just anything you can add?

I just inherited of a 2004 rx8 with 155000 miles. One owner, my wife's aunt.

She is in her 60s now. She had absolutely no clue about the pre-mix, flood, oil change, octane, high rpm and other RX8 paranoia.
She just drove it like she would drive any other car, like a Toyota Corolla.

Now the engine finally give up, it flooded and does not want to start. It could probably be salvaged and run a bit longer but I am putting a rebuild as I want to car to be 100% reliable. Other that the engine, the driver's sunvisor needs to be replaced and there was a bit of water in one of the rear tail light.

Other than that, the car is still like brand new.

Don't be afraid of the mileage.

Bought at 98k from a car salesman's personal car. He seemed like he knew about rotarys. Knew much more than me at that time. I changed the coils/plugs around 105k? It is a 2004 with all recall's done. Other than that the car is stock. I redline once in a while. :P

It was a sad night last night, while crusing I hit the big 5 0 in my 2004 RX-8!

I'm more than halfway to my cat failure, clutch pedal snap-off and engine replacement!

Wow, you're doing real good! In the interest of helping others (including myself) find a trend for the longevity of S1 engines, here are some standard questions. Please answer as complete as you can. Thanks.

First and only Engine in the Car? (Yes or no):
-Please only answer the rest of these questions if Yes.

Current Mileage:

Buy New or Used?:

Year:

AT or MT:

How often do you Redline? (Less often, Often, Very Often):

What type of driving typically would you say you expose your rx8 to in city/highway ratio? (Ex. 50/50, 50 city/50 highway; 30/70; etc.):

Do you Premix? (Ex. Lucas UCL, Marvel MO, Idemitsu, Amsoil Saber, etc):

Oil Change Interval (Ex. 2500 miles, 3000 miles, etc):

Brand & Viscosity of Oil used (Ex. Mobil Clean 5000 5W30, etc):

Parts that you have replaced since owning the car (maintenance related or not):

Have you ever done a compression test?

If yes, what was the result?

Problems that you may have had:

Thanks for answering!

~130k miles on my Lightning Yellow RX-8. Entirely self-maintained after my free 50k mile scheduled service. I had bought a 7 year 100k mile extended warranty that I never used...

She runs as great as the day 1. I was planning to own her 3/4 years tops by which time I've saved up enough for an upgrade. Well, she never faltered and in the 7 years I've owned her. So I ended up saving for much longer (with the money accumulated, this year I've rewarded myself with an upgrade to a Lotus Evora although my RX8 will still be daily driver)

Buy New or Used?: new

Year: 2004, bought in April 2003

AT or MT: MT

How often do you Redline? (Less often, Often, Very Often): first 3 years, very very often. Next four years (and many tickets), not so often

Do you Premix? (Ex. Lucas UCL, Marvel MO, Idemitsu, Amsoil Saber, etc): not oil. However I use Berryman B12 ChemTool for three consecutive fill ups every year..

Oil Change Interval (Ex. 2500 miles, 3000 miles, etc): stop changing my oil 50k. I just add 1qt every 2 or 3 months, for then past 4 years. Never had any problems.

Brand & Viscosity of Oil used (Ex. Mobil Clean 5000 5W30, etc): cheapest 5w20 I could find, usually ford motor oil @ $1.20/qt. Sometimes penzoil.

Parts that you have replaced since owning the car (maintenance related or not): wheels upgraded after 15k, to 275/45 rear, 255/45 front. Running on 3rd set of Kumho Ecsta SPT's. Also changed my brake pads once, all four ignition coils & spark plugs at 50k (original warranty covered).

Problems that you may have had:
Battery drained due to not driving her for about two months in 2005. Went to start her up without thinking and flooded her. This was before Mazda published the recovery steps for this flooding behavior. It was at thisntimenthat the service guys replaced my spark plugs. Later an ignition coil burned out which warranty covered, along with the replacing the others.

Also the ceramic comb inside the catalytic converter burned away and disintegrated completely, and ejected out through the exhaust (over the course of a year, I heard rattling bits until they were all blown out). Because no element was there, the exhaust fumes started to wreak of gasoline. Dealership put in new cat.

Had a fender bender accident on the freeway with reckless idiot driving a ghetto-souped up piece of crap 80's mustang in 2006. Busted the rear left fender and bent the multilink suspension. Insurance covered full OEM repair and paint/body work. Painted the entire left side of the car.

Lastly had a fuse burn out in the central cigarette lighter port in the slide covered center console tray.

Thanks for answering! [/QUOTE]
