We do have a remote start on our MT saturn and it's the same!The only thing is that you have to be in neutral when you turn off the car or it won't start!

It's easy and really helpful for the flooding issue on the 8 i guess, i'll have one on the 8 shortly, thanks to my wife and my birthday!

Yes it can..

First, you need a box that will bypass oem security (the chip in the key).

Second, I don't want just remote start but also ones that I could program how long the car will run for... I don't want the car to be idling for days if I don't shut it off.

Third, the alarm.. I'm not just getting the remote start but also the security system that will control remote locking and such.. I hate carrying extra keys or key fobs..

At the end, all this ads up and also the labor to get this puppy connected.. I paid $500 or so for my remote start on both of my FDs and because of the chipped key, I need to spend couple of hundred more for it..

To bad there isn't a Remote Start system that uses the existing ECU for the 'in gear' sensor... I was going through the OBD interface, and there is a value for 'in gear', which looks to be operational.

On a Tangent, Autopage is looking to streamline remote interface based on the recent C3 show.

Yes, you need a programmable immobilizer bypass. I used a DEI 1100F in my girlfriend's 3 and it works perfectly, no key. The difference is that it has the chip in it, so you just program the chip instead of the bypass using the chip in the key. The immobilizer bypass only powers when the remote start tells it to, so if someone broke in they wouldn't be able to hotwire it.

If you're going to end up buying one get it from eBay or the like, it should cost around $50. Circuit City has them on their website for $150...

Gotcha, thanks. That makes alot of sense now. This means that I might have to install one of these though

Also, there is a neutral switch on the transmission we could be tapping into...

maybe on a blown vette or something, but id love to see the rx8 start and not stall even WITHOUT the emergency brake up.

Indeed.. I'd be more concerned about flooding the engine than running into something..

i start my car all the time with the handbrake up or down. it makes no difference.

what are you talking about?

what are you talking about?
He's talking about remote starting the car in gear. With relatively low torque, he feels it would stall before driving into something...

I have an alarm/remote starter thats "made" for manual. When I park my car, i press a button on the remote where the car chirps while its still running. Then, when u remove the key, the car is still running. U then open the door and exit the vehicle while the car is still running and the keys are in ur hand. Then, when u close the door, the car shuts off in which u arm it.
The alarm knows that because u exited the car while it was running then it must be in neutral hence its 100% safe to autostart the car. If the door reopens or the alarm gets set off for whatever reason then u cannot autostart the car as the unit will deactivate the autostart feature and ull have to cycle through the original steps again in order to prep it to autostart.
In this instance... The only way the car will jerk forward if i autostart it would be if the car is in gear and the only way to trick the system is if someone was in the car and pressed the shifter forward. But who ever was in there would have to sit in the car all night/day motionless as not to set off the alarm to deactivate the autostart feature and assuming he managed not to set the alarm off and i autostart... then he would be in it as the car would hurl through a brick wall.

In many cars it's a lot easier than that ^. I installed a Viper 5900 in my 3 and there is a neutral lead if you have a manual. You hook the neutral lead from the Viper to the car's and it then knows if the car is in neutral. That seems like a better application, less complicated anyway.

Just use the neutral safety wire that all decent remote starts have and hook it up to the neutral switch that runs from the tranny to the PCM.

That way it won't start in gear... no BS about pressing the brake or opening doors and holding the hand brake.... it just doesn't start if the car is in gear.
