Has anyone here done Remote Start on a Manual RX-8?

I'd like to get it done with the Winter coming up..although its 73 degrees in mid November here, but I've always wanted remote start

Does anyone here have it for their manual rx-8?

Cons, Pros?

kersh4w 11-14-2007 11:22 AM

yes people have this. you can get the dealer to install it i believe.

and the pros/cons are the same for just about every car...

nycgps 11-14-2007 11:30 AM

Its illegal to install Remote start kind of thing for Manual Car.

Of course you can always do it yourself ~

Archie's8 11-14-2007 11:37 AM

Remembering to leave it out of gear is definately key.... just do it yourself, or find a local shop to do it.

I check into this a couple of years ago and was told it is illegal to install on a manual . Why I ask ? He said that if something was to happen to the car or person that they would be held responsible . If someone left the car in gear and that car would take off ........big problem for who did the hook up. Of course someone is getting sued.....

i have remote start on my car, im not worry about having my car in gear cause i have to turbo time which i cant put my car in gear when i turn off my car anyways! :)

In some places it's illegal to leave an unattended car running.

Last winter there was a piece on the news about how the police in one of the DC burbs were doing land office business prowling neighborhoods in the morning and ticketing running remote-started cars.

Check your local laws.

I've always pictured this chain of events:

a. remote start your car.

b. passerby immediately jumps in car, drives away

I've got a great remote starter: My 15 year old son who thinks it's great fun to get in my RX-8 and start it.

And as far as i know any quality car starter has a bypass for manual transmissions where you have to "set it up" to remote start before u turn the car off.

You drive home from work, pull in the driveway, put it in neutral and let ur foot off the clutch (as its tied in with the button on the floor), press the button on the remote. The lights flash telling you its setup. Turn the ignition off and take the key out (but the car remains on). Get out, lock the doors, car turns off. In the morning press the button, car turns on.

Fail safe for noobs

When you hit the brakes in a car that has been remote started it turns off unless a key is in the ignition (and turned to run)

Just check your local/state laws. In the state of Kentucky, it's illegal to have a vehicle running unattended, even if the doors are locked. The laws purpose is supposedly to prevent vehicle theft. Even though remote starts have the kill switch if you hit the brakes without inserting the key, KY's law does not care.

Honestly, the odds of a police officer enforcing the law is pretty slim to none, though. I mean, seriously, are the cops driving around neighborhoods in the morning, looking for cars running? I seriously doubt it. There's "actual" crimes going on that they are dealing with (such as, "it's a crime for krispy kreme to only have 50 donuts fresh and hot at any given time; they need bigger equipment"!)

Yeah, I guess no one elses double checks that the doors are locked by...locking them like mine does?

I have it on my RX-7s (FDs). Both are manual cars and only had 2 small incidents... Involving someone sitting in my car and them putting in gear. Besides those, no problems. I also had it on my previous daily and LOVED it! Remote start it, let the car warm up, and drive way!. I'm planning to put remote/alarm in my 8. Just need to find the time to get it installed (quoted $700).

j67345 11-23-2007 09:13 PM

Does the remote starter have any effect on the warranty?

mdw1000 11-24-2007 12:33 PM

Get an AT.

Myardor 11-24-2007 12:44 PM

How much?

I saw a remote starter on sale at Pep Boys for 39.99 on Black Friday.
So the install is that much, cant be can it?

mdw1000 11-25-2007 12:59 AM

We have a remote start on our TL. If you put your foot on the brake to put the car in gear without putting the key in, the engine will shut off. Not sure how that would work on an MT.
