First big problem

I got a 2004 stick with 69xxx miles on it. Everything has been fine for the most part, but finally experiencing mechanical issues. First noticed on the freeway, shifting at high rpms from 3 to 4 causes loud and harsh grinding noises getting into 4. It only happens from 3 to 4, and it sounds like I'm shifting without pushing the clutch in all the way. And it only happens at high rpms, like 6plus. Come to think of it, my whole gearbox is really notchy, not so comfortable throwing the gears like I used to be able to.

ps. changed diffy and transmission oil about a month ago with royal purps gearmax

I think the 3-4 shift difficulty at high RPM is a common problem .
Mine was doing it also . I swapped over to Redline lightweight shookproof and it has been sweet ever since . Some say that this oil is not the right one for the tranny - I say my 8 lurves it .
Also : bleed your clutch line before you blame the tranny .

This is common with RP Gearmax. I had the same exact issue until I switched fluids. Your clutch and tranny are fine...

Could be the clutch slave cylinder. There is a TSB that describes this. check it out on the proformance website. Bring it to the dealer and have them check this first. It may be an east fix. If you don't you'll damage your trans and clutch.

i have the exact same situation - grinding in 3-4 upshift. It started at 32k miles at 5800 rpm or above. At 47k miles it started to happen at 4k and above. I am dropping my car off at the dealer tomorrow. Getting a new transmission.

As a matter of interest how much is a new transmission ($US) these days...?

free under warranty.

you should be able to get a used one for 1k or so. New? I would guess it's in the 3k range + labor, but that's a baseless guess.

I had the same problem when I put RP in mine so I changed it out with RL shockproof heavy and the problem was gone!

^ agreed.

I got a new tranny at about 20 thousand miles since it would always grind the 3 to 4 shift, but only at redline - hard to explain at the dealer because that's a 90MPH shift, but they gave me no problems.

Before the switch, I tried new fluids to no avail.

Damn. Yah some buddies said it was because I changed the oils. But how could fluid affect this, its a mechanical issue no? Am I looking at a new transmission? I have some sort of third party warranty, but I doubt it would cover a whole new transmission. Any tips on how to approach this issue with the dealer?

The properties of the oil make it too slippery. Hence no oil on the gears to make mesh togeather smoothly.
