Here is something I posted in another forum on the subject.

There is a stretch of road in Naples Florida that has 6 lanes, a divider, great visibility, and maybe 2 access points in a mile or two. Speed limit?...35mph. The cops are out there running laser quite often and generating a lot of revenue for the city/county government.

The speed limit gets decreed by the wizard of oz for all we citizens know. Yet we are all supposed to assume that the "government" picks the speed limit based on road conditions and safety concerns by "experts."

Speed limits have become similar to warning labels. They are often so ridiculous, ("do not use while bathing" on my wife’s blow dryer for instance, or "remove before driving" on the sun shades that cover the entire windshield of a car,) that nobody really puts much stock in them anymore. They drive the speed limit strictly to obey the government mandates and avoid the financial wrath of said government's. -not because they think another 10mph would put them or anyone else in jeopardy.

There are still traffic limits that are set in a thoughtful manner but they get lost in the noise of all the other nonsense out there.

My favorite example is the "advisory" signs for curves. In Florida, a "35mph" advisory sign means you can safely negotiate the turn in the rain, on four corded tires, through an oil slick, at say 45mph. Absolutely useless advisory speed signs in Florida. In WV though, I was surprised to find that their signs make sense. 35mph advisory means 45mph will make your tires sing and palms sweaty -under perfect conditions. IIRC the tail of the dragon's advisory signs are ok also.

With so many speed limits set artificially low, few people give them much credence. The only difference between most speed limits and the tag on my mattress that reads “DO NOT REMOVE UNDER PENALTY OF LAW” is that people don’t have to worry about getting a ticket on their mattress.

Its kinda diff in here, should I say I love the way NYC deal with speeding? LOL

but still, the catch is try to jerk the cop around, make him *planning to come* then *cancel* at last minute. usually they will get sick of it(or cant come for small **** like this anymore) and you'll win.

There was a talk about upping the NYS speed limit to something like 65 a while ago, because studies show that when its set @ 55, people spend way more time stuck in traffic, wasting time, time = money, and produce a lot of bad pollution.

but then some morons came up and like oh if they up it to 65 more people will drive faster, and will cause more death.

Well, Im thinking that, if you get hit @ 55, you still die. I know I know 65 will cause death easier, but what does that have to do with anything? maybe they should up the limit, then make the licensing thing 1000% harder than it is now. Its stupid driver who causes all the accident. Especially Old, young, and female drivers.

I have NOTHING against them, I love my grandfather, I have cousins, and I have GF :P, but come on.

It's just bs in a sense that everyone goes about that same speed around there, and never gets caught, one car which was way ahead of me going maybe, or at least 70. It's also bs that the cop has to be even more of an a-hole after he stops me. Knowing that he wants to choose a guy driving a sports car. Freaking hater.

And I also heard that cops can't radar you at the bottom of any hills.. But sure, that doesn't matter to him, cause he's a police, and they can do almost anything they want.

i think most people on this forum would agree with upping the damn speed limit

everyone on here is hopefully not a terrorist, and definitly not a ******* insane loon

but it is very hard to obey the law when the law is ******* stupid(sorry for language)

a very good example is the City of Irvine here in Socal, for some apparent reason, most of their local roads speed limits are set at 60mph, they have like 0% crime rate for the past 10 years (I quoted my friend, correct me if I'm wrong) and still, I do not see anymore accidents there than I do at any other place........so please, stop being rediculous, the speed limit must change, 65 on the highway is stupid and rediculous, no one goes at 65 on the highway, even mopeds go 70+ why? BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IS GOING THAT FAST!!

retards who drive 65 mph on the highway is a freaking hazard, they cause accidents. I am not asking for radical changes, but upping it by 75 more will cause more good than harm.

the retards who said it will create more accidents are the retards who cause accidents in the first god damn place

nuff said

??? I have no idea why they couldn't radar you at the bottom of hills. The FCC used to regulate radar usage in certain areas, (and maybe they still do) but I don't think it had anything to do with hills.

With that many cop cars in one place the were probably having what I call a "laser party" One cop with a laser picks off individual cars and sends "chase cars" after those they catch speeding. Laser is expensive and this is a way to get more $$$ out of a single laser gun.

^ I have seen that used before

around Walnut, there is a very very flat open road with no stop lights, no nothing or about a mile or 2, the cops would wait in ambush mode, 1 cop with a laser gun pointed out, 3-4 more cruisers behind him and the cop would beam laser at u, and then the cruisers would go out and get u..............and u want me to support our law enforcement? i say free gun and let me shoot the ****** myself

You can take it to court and it will more than likely get reduced.

I got caught doing 137km/h in 70km/h zone. The fine was $400 and 5points off my license. I paid it and after 3years I got my points back. I have not gotten a ticket since and that was in 2002.

Im with Taja, its hard to obey stupid laws.

Oh hey there is a *First bite forgiveness law*, dogs in certain state can bite (or even kill) anyone with no charges. as long as its their *first time* Is that a right law to obey ? if its me I will just take my gun out and shoot the ******* dog.

Speed limit should be up, Its nice to have a lot of flat lands in America, and you limit people to stupid 55?

It does not matter how old you're. If its stupid, then its stupid.

and hey, do you know that in NYC, you hardly see a cop car stops at a red light, what they will do is turn their fuxking sirens on, and go right pass it. one time I saw an accident happened at Fresh Pond road where a *regular car* just hit the cop car cuz the cop decided he has an *emergency* at the stop light, turn the thing on and just floor his car and BOOM. the other car hit him. I gotta say good luck to that guy, hes gonna be charged with hitting a cop car. Even tho he is NOT at fault.

also a lot of times when I saw these fuxking cops just turn their sirens on so they can rush back to their Precinct to get off work. Yep. Oh another one, what about Dunkin Donuts ? Turn their Sirens on so they can go there, Thats law ?

Can I say **** THE COPS then ?

^ exactly what I am saying NYCGPS.........people that do not except these facts are either dillusional morons or lost touch with reality in the late 70s

**** does not happen the way they are supposed to. the law is the law, yes. but I am going to fight the damn law, and the law hasn't won yet.

the reason that it should be raised is that 55 was reasonable about 20 years ago, when grandma trucks and minivans had a top speed of 80miles per hour and the pwnage ferraris and lambo diablos can do a whopping 168miles per hour

welcome to the modern F*king world!! siennas, odysseys, even the freaking jeep wrangler can cruise at a comfortable 80mph and still have wayy more than enough stopping power

isn't that why we have so many crazy safety standards? wtf man. people commute furthur and furthur away from home, and as much as we like to drive our 8s, we cant be late to work or school. its ******* rediculous.

and YES nycgps, I would shoot that mother f*king dog too

You know, above around 50 mph you start getting significant amounts of drag from wind resistance, leading to a reduction in fuel economy. The most compelling reason to keep the speed limits at 65 is to save gas.

The other compelling reason is that unlike places like Germany, America doesn't teach lane discipline or car control in drivers ed. Your average joe does not understand that a car handles differently at 100mph then it does at 65, nor does he understand that he should always be as close to the far right hand lane as possible.

Yes, you could get rid of speed limits, but you would then see idiots in mustangs driving 120 in traffic at 6MPG, rear ending idiots in Prius's who are driving 55 in the passing lane.

thats why you issue an IQ test along with the drivers exam. that should keep the idiots off the road. and the people that drive without their license or insurance, should be punished WAY harsher

Unfortunately, driving in America is considered a right, not a privilege.

I agree with you, but I don't realistically believe there is any way of making it happen. Are you going to be the DMV employee that has to retest millions upon millions of people who have driven their entire life, then tell 3/4ths of them that they fail and cannot drive anymore?

You might want a bullet proof vest for a job like that.

Socket, u do have a point, as of now our driver's license is insanely screwed over

again it is human error, but we dont fix it, we try to cover it up

I am not saying to abolish speed limits, but u need to up the speed limit soon

I happened to live in new york
and I hardly see a cop car running red

you can say **** the police, **** that, and **** this all you want
it's your right but driving is not.
I'm from LA, and one thing i know
we ****** HATE cops here.

I don't care what idiot president of ours is doing(at least not anymore..) or how ridiculous and stupid some laws are.

I still live by them.

you're not looking at the big picture
of how police in general have touched many people's lives and are greatly benefiting our society.

Sorry but I gotta say ALL of us, Yes ALL of us broke some sort of law one way or the other. Have you ever heard of Jay walking ?

NYC is not part of the *ONe dog One Bite* rule, but it will be funny if you're in one of those states, a dog bite your arm and leg off, but you cant do anything to it or the owner. How does that feel ? if its me I'll still shoot the dog. sue me. I did the right thing I know.

No one is going against the speed limit, yes it should be here. but the limits are too *low* now, raise it up a bit wont hurt.

That might be true for cars 30 years ago.but today's automobile are designed with low low drag, significantly lower than the old cars.

Lets not forget the longer the engine stays on, the more crap it produce. Sure you use a bit more gas to push a car @ 65 than 55. Its more but not that bad when you calculate the bad stuff that it produce.

something travels @ 75 mph hits you, 99.999999999999999% chances that you will die on scence , 65, 99.99999999999999%, notice the diff? Usually human will die if hit by something traveling around 35 mph.

Speed limit cant fix stupidity, they should make licensing much much harder. starting NOW! and of course, up the speed limit.

Ahh lets not go too far from the topic.
