super dumb question but I can't find it anywhere..what is the trip and the changing number next to it to the right of the speedometer?

 

It sounds like you're talking about the trip odometer and odometer.

 

so if the previous owner on my 8 used a synthetic like Mobil 1 or RP that is like 10w30 for example, and since it burns off some oil, can I add a conventional oil like Castrol GTX? and does it have to have the same viscosity as 10w30?

checked the plugs last night right before i found the leak, all were brown and looked to be running fine so i figured the coils are still good then. I was wondering if the test pipe could be doing it as i have no access port and my o2 sensor constantly stays on. Any thoughts? I'm gonna try and sell it i think so i'm trying to figure it all out in the next week because the warranty is out in august. i don't think its low compression tho because sometimes it acts up when its sat for a few hours and the engine is cold.

I would have the compression checked anyway... What do you have to loose besides paying for the test, if it fails then you'd know you may have a chance wih getting a remanufactured engine.

 

So I was having hot start issues, I replaced my plugs and the problem got worse started to misfire on the top end. Crossed my fingers and trailered it to No Star Bash for a weekend of drifting.

When I got back the problem got even worse it would run great then misfire for a bit then run fine again. I replaced the wires coils and cleaned the ess. Now it wont even start. I tried the 20 brake pump trick and nothing happened. CEL is flashing when I crank it over now. Is it compression test time? Leaving the battery unhooked and trying it again in the morning.

 

Have the CEL read.

 

Where is the best place to have an engine rebuilt/built/ported etc. in southern california with so many shops around and so many to choose from who does the best work.

 

well, to my knowlage there was a bunch of bad flashes by mazda in 04 and 05, i imagine it might be safer to own a 05, knowing that there was less bad flashes, but for most the damage has been done... and why we keep hearing about replacing motors all of the time from 04s and 05s... the engines are hand built so they all go at different times, but i think that is the only thing i know about 04s and 05s being different..

but ill add my own tidbit of confusingness..

When i bought my 09, the dealership (acura) said it was a sport, the carfax said it was a touring and when my insurance paid me after it was totalled they said it was a grand touring.. lol.

 

when replacing plugs, wires , and coils, are there labels telling you which rotor is the front rotor, and which rotor is the back rotor, along with which is the leading/trailing plug?

and which coils go with what plug?

 

Doesn't matter which coil goes where as long as you match the ignition harness, coil and spark plug up with the correct spark plug lead.

The mounting bracket for the coils should have which coil goes where
Like this : --> L1 T1 L2 T2
Means Leading 1 Trailing 1 Leading 2 Trailing 2

If I recall correctly ... the Ignition harness does not have which plug goes to which coil so don't get it mixed up.

The housing where the spark plugs are should have a T or an L to indicate Trailing and Leading.
The Trailing plugs are the top ones and the Leading are the lower spark plugs.

Number 1 rotor is the front rotor closest to the radiator and the number 2 rotor (rear) is the one closest to the driver seat or transmission.

 

Yes the trip odometer that's next to the odometer. . I'm used to my other car only has a speedometer not no odometer. So I guess my question is what the trip odometer? And what does it indicate. Recently bought 04 rx8 turbo w/ greddy exhaust and an aftermarket intake.

 

The trip odometer is just there for your use for whatever distance measurement you look for. Each of the two trip odometers goes from 0.0 to 9999.9 before rolling over to 0.0 again. Most people use one for miles on that tank of gas to calculate mileage.

I find it difficult to believe your other car does not have an odometer, though i guess it's possible if you are in a country without vehicle regulations?


And buying a turbo'ed RX-8 is exceedingly rare, since every single one is custom. There have been a few cases of people thinking they are buying a turbocharged RX-8 when they were actually just lied to and it's a naturally aspirated RX-8.

If you did in-fact just buy a turbocharged RX-8, you problem bought someone's problem.

Oh ok I'd never seen one digital so that's why I didn't know what the heck I was looking at, as for my other car it's a sentra bare bones only has power steering and only a speedometer but I know where it shifts, anyway..

I assure you my RX8 is boosted, you don't put in a greddy e-01 boost gauge for nothing.
I've only gotten it up to like 120mph at like 6 pounds of boost maybe a little more. It's a fun car!

When you say "buy someone's problem" I'm assuming you reffering to the rotary engines bad track record?!?

 

Rocket, have you actually lifted the hood and seen the turbo ? A NA 8 will pull 145 mph no sweat.

Does it really affect anything if my engine light is on (O2 rear sensor)??? Do I HAVE to replace it asap?? And whay would be an approx. cost for that??

If your CEL is on "in general" then yes, it most certainly can affect your engine and many other parts of the car.

The rear O2 sensor is used primarily to determine if the cat is doing it's job.

It also has a minor impact on fuel mileage, using it as an enhanced trim balancer in certain conditions.

If you run no cat, and/or don't require a clear ODB2 system for emissions, then yes, you can ignore it. However, the problem is that if another code pops up, you won't notice unless you manually check. Therefore, if you are going to drive around with a CEL on, get yourself a code reader to check for other codes periodically.


Or you could just replace it. It's the cheaper of the two O2 sensors.
