Ive recently noticed my shift **** can be rotated about 3 degrees left and right, both before and after i installed my axial flow short shift. Anyone know if this is normal? i got a new tranny when i bought my car (1.5 years ago) so I'm pretty sure thats not the issue. Also, anyone had to re glue the top of the shifter to the leather base? Ive used a few different epoxies but nothing holds for long. TIA

Compression test

So I recently purchased an rx8. I haven't noticed any major issues with it but I've been reading it may be a good idea to get a compression test.
Does anyone have experience with low compression and warranty coverage?
If I go in and get the compression test and it shows that the compression is below the optimal range, but still passes will that be enough to get a rebuild under my warranty or does it have to fail to the point that the engine doesnt work at all.

Its a numbers game. We have a compression test results chart in the new owners thread that shows the numbers for failing and passing engines, based on experience and tests of hundreds of members engines. The Mazda dealer have their own set of compression test numbers that are considered low enough to grade the engine as failing. It is hard to get Mazda to sign off on a engine replacement under warranty unless your compression test numbers fall under their failing marks. Your engine can still be running with failing numbers.

Scroll down through second page of this post to see the post and chart about engine compression tests and numbers.

Has anyone tryed any of the android phone apps. To check ur car data in real time ?? I've heard of a little blue tooth device u plug into ur cars computer and it bluetooths data to ur phone and u can check almost everything from temps, To codes, to 0-60 ... I think this would b a great little device but I don't know if there are individual products that stand out and do a better job than the others ... Has anyone tryed them yet ??

Torque app for Android is popular, I have it, it's well worth it.
$5 for the app, Bluetooth dongles vary in price, mine was $35 from Amazon.
Some people have even converted the popup nav hood to use with a tablet to display it.

Yes, i've never seen anything to indicate you can't. Even Mazmart just lists one, no distinction between auto and manual. All midpipes are only labeled for the RX-8, never for a transmission difference.

coils

Do the ignition coils actually NEED to make contact with the metal bracket they sit on?

No .. u can put a Spacer or Heat Wrap between if u like. They would still be in contact through the hole where u put the nut on.

Actually its better to have some sort of insulation between the bracket itself and the coils.

Greetings

Why would it be better? With a good insulator, the corona discharge (what causes the white spots) would build up more and make a larger arc to a different location.

It's best to leave the coils on their bracket. 4 pin coils have the discharge grounding area internally, the 3 pin ones do not. It generally won't do anything bad if you move them to a place with more airflow, but don't just add an insulator to the bottom, they'll fail more quickly.

So I've read that you have to change your oil every 3000 miles/6 months. I changed my oil a year ago and since then I've done 800 miles. Do I need to change it or can I wait until I do 3000 miles?

I was planning on adding 2-3 washers under the coil where the nut goes. Kind of increase airflow under the coil and reduce temps by not letting them contact the bracket wich gets stupid hot. There would be no insolation between the coils and bracket. Thoughts?

Red face Clutch Pedal Mounting Bracket

Hey y'all, I'm on here for my boyfriend... He works a lot and I do the research so I have a question... Pretty much here's what happened. He was driving, and all of a sudden no clutch. We both work at Pep Boys and we looked at it and noticed that the clutch slave cyl was leaking inside the car. We got the part and changed it. Now while in the process of bleeding the clutch,. the bracket by the firewall broke. My question here is should I get the bracket reinforcement kit or just go ahead and get a whole new pedal assembly? Please answer asap.

It's broke a lot worse than bad, it literally snapped. one of the pieces where a bolt is supposed to go through on the bracket is completely off the bracket. I just dont know if at this point we should just do the reinforcement bracket kit or get a brand new assembly

If you're going to get a new assembly, I would suggest:

Black Halo Racing Reinforced Clutch Pedal | Black Halo Racing

More expensive than a part from Mazda, but I think cheaper than Mazda + reinforcement kit. Charles knows his stuff, and developed this after his own encounter with a broken clutch bracket.

You're right - I'm brain dead today. There's an 8 year extended warranty on that part. Just depends on how old the car is.

yes that extended warranty on the bracket is 8yrs, 100,000 miles from initial sale date of the car.

I wouldn't worry too much about changing the oil, as long as the car doesn't sit for extended periods of time between starts (ie over 6 months).

Anyone ever had the Hazards briefly flash when taking a corner? I noticed they flash inside the car for a second, but not sure about outside. It seems to do it with or without the traction control off.

I know my car had the yaw rate sensor replaced on it, but I wasn't sure if this was an electrical issue or a design feature. No codes or DTCs are being recorded so I am not sure what is going on. Seems odd to me.

The corner that sets it off is on a mildly steep incline, on a right hand corner at 10-40 mph at a stoplight.

That's interesting ...

sounds like an electrical issue. My guess is you have an unshielded wire somewhere and on those hard turns the wire shorts out against a metal frame causing the flashing.

Have you dont anything recently with your stereo or around that area?

This car I left alone. I was thinking if it wasn't a stock feature it has to be something on the BCM or related to the hard turning of the wheel. When I turn my wheel really hard strange things happen, but I have read that just happens.

Would you guess that would be around the PCM area, in the center trim runner, or near something else?

I don't have a great history of body control modules sadly. That is what I laid off this car because I was thinking I was nuking them because of aftermarkets amps. Everything is stock right now, but I am the second owner so.... you never know.

Need help!

Sorry guys have to butt in on this thread, I do not have privileges to start my own thread

My 8 is not starting! I tried to start it yesterday, after noticing a red light flashing on my smart key I assumed it would be the battery replacement on the smart key. Tried to start it after finding my spare key just now but no luck. It isn't even trying to start, all I am hearing is loud 'bangs', it is not flooded. After a couple of seconds trying to start it, the alarm starts to come on, when I release the dial for ignition, alarm stops and the RPM gauges reset (shoot up to 10k and drop again). Has anyone come across this strange problem before? Any help would be much appreciated!
