the rx-8 is the best car in that it gives you the most. but it costs you the most too. now does it have the best bang for your buck is probably the question.
the way i see it is if any of these apply, do not get the rx-8
1) you don't want to put a little more care into it. it does require a bit more care than other cars. to be more precise, anti-flooding (making sure your engine is warm or revving it at shut down) and checking oil more often (this is really over blown though; if you drive "normally" you'll have to put more oil in every ~2000 miles, the harder you drive it, the more often you have to refill though). The oil is totally trivial. The anti-flooding stuff can get annoying since you're not going to want to move your car if the engine is cold.
2) you care about gas mileage. it's rated at 18/24, but as with all EPA figures it's probably going to be off. Expect more like 16/22. Some people do get 18/24 or better out of their cars though, and some people get like 10/14! I think most people will get around 16/22.
3) if reliability is #1. the car has... quirks. consumer reports lists the rx-8 as below average reliability. i think very few people have serious issues with the car, it's probably on par with most other cars. but many people have... quirks. like for me i have a crappy air conditioner (that they "fixed" but still is crappy) and horrendous brake squeal (which there's a TSB for and I fit in the VIN range for, but Tustin Mazda didn't do by themselves... I'll have to ask). a lot of people have had various minor pieces break on them (ie visor, buttons, etc). All covered under warranty though.
4) you're a drag racer type. some guys wind up hating the car since they wanted to be able to beat 350Zs, S2000s, G35s, SRT-4s, Mustangs off the line. You won't do it. If that's your main reason for buying a car, buy a different one.
The main benefits for each:
Eclipse: newest car. most power (if you get the v6). i like the way it looks... at least from 3/4 view.
RSX: cheapest. it's an acura so reliability and driveability should be great.
RX-8: rear wheel drive. some people can't stand FWD. the rx-8 is the only one of the 3 here that is RWD. the other benefits of this car you can find all over this forum. but let's just say that consumer reports considers it one of the best in it's class though can't recommend it due to "reliability" issues .

Woah where'd you get $48,000 in Canada? That's crazy talk!
The 8 starts at $36,000...I have an '04 GT with sunroof for $41 including taxes and everything. With all the deals out there now, you should be able to get a fully loaded for under $40,000....

A friend on mine in Winnipeg has a fully loaded G35C that came to about $50K. So I don't know why your bro paid so much...?
Just so you know, some of our mutual friends have been in both our cars and like mine better. I've driven the G35C and it feels like you're driving on it, whereas the 8 feels like your driving in it. It's a much better "driver's car", IMO.
I can't comment on the 2 other cars that you're choosing from since I've never driven or been in either of them.

wow your in the exact situation i am, almost. my brother has a g35 and i would like to "keep up with him" too. my top two comparisons at the moment are rsx-s and the 8. i was almost going to get an rsx but then i went to the forum and in a comparison with the g35 everyone said get the g35 and called the rsx the poor mans g35 =\. so now im basically where u r again haha.
the rsx-s can easily become faster than the 8 but the interior is shitty imo. so if you care alot about that stuff i wudnt go for it otherwise its great
