Don't think Click and Clack drive RX-8's

Haven't posted in a while, but came across this article today:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...MTCD1KJV30.DTL

Almost felt like I should comment, then again 99% of the general population would probably just give me a funny look if i mentioned the words "port" and "rotors"

There is no proof a "redline a day" does anything to prolong the life of a Renesis engine.

Yeah, I've read a lot of debate about it. Not enough, really, though, to find many who argue that it's actually detrimental.

Yeah, as long as your engine is warm it can't hurt to go to 8500 or so.

While there is no real proof of the "red line a day" theory, you should still get your rpms up to the 8k range here and there so the ports open up to help prevent build up.

I redline mine several times a tank (I don't count them).
1. It's fun
2. Works the ports
3. I have logged several 100k miles in rx7s and redlining the hell out of them only seemed to help. I know the rx8 has different exhaust ports but it should still help blow out the trash in the motor. You have to remember we burn oil too, which gunks up.

Just my 2cents

I choose to believe that my car needs to be redlined at least once a day...

I did have the Mazda master tech tell me you should run it hard occasionally. Not exactly the manual though. And the last port opens at around 7250 if I recall correctly. So my theory is not redline a day but bring it up to 7500 or so just to clear out that last port.

Although there was a little Mazda pamphlet in the glove box that said, among other things, the "Renesis loves to rev," or something to that effect. To me, that was Mazda's way of saying rev it high and often.

redlining does help to keep carbon down a shade but carbon is always going to be an enemy. redlining often does, over time, wear the rotor bearings faster than normal. above redline, apex seal chatter can occur as well. i redline my every few days but i don't see the need to beat the engine on a daily basis. i have 38K miles on my 05 and not one issue with carbon.

That's exactly what I was told recently when I took the car for service due to a check engine light.

Although this tech phrased it like "sir, don't be shy with the gas pedal on these cars", lol
