Thanks again. I will be taking it in tomorrow morning bright & early. I'll keep everyone updated on the findings so they can hopefully assist someone in the future.

** UPDATE **

Dropped the car off this morning. On the way to the dealer, my air bag warning light began to flicker as well. I had the connections for it tightened once before b/c it had come loose, so I believe that's what that was again.

As for the valve. The gentleman just called and said he ordered the kit for the one valve. Not sure the exact name of the kit he spoke of, but after reading the codes, he said the one piece just needed replaced and he ordered the kit and it would arrive tomorrow. I guess it's under warranty as he didn't ask me if I wanted to go through with it and he didn't give me a price (just said he went ahead and ordered it). Anyone know exactly about this kit he speaks of? A little more of an exact answer? I was on the other line, so couldn't stay on with him for long, but he said it will be all ready to go tomorrow.

Sorry I may have mistyped. I'm not sure if it was one valve, I just wrote that by accident. It may be the kit that houses all the valves that open along the RPM range.

Is this the complete intake system? I don't have the correct name for this off the top of my head.

The code was for the APV not the SSV. So lets just forget about the SSV for now until something says that its the problem.

The APV is controled by a motor not a diaphram. The APV motor is completely controlled by the PCM. How much does the OP drive above 6000 rpm?

I drive a whole bunch up there, but the problem is, I just got my engine replaced 2,000 or so miles ago and drive the first 1,000 pretty cautiously under break-in. The next 1,000 were def. spirited. I am supposed to pick it up pretty soon as they are supposed to call me this afternoon. I will let you know the exact part and process when I pick it up.

Thats what Im thinking.

a kit to replace the APV huh ... hmm. Not sure if they're talking about the APV valve or the motor. or could be both.

but as far as I know, the motor has to be removed, well, at least they have to remove the body before u can access to it.

Just got her back... Here is what the invoice says:

CHECK LIGHT ON INT P2004
INSTALLED UPDATED APV GEAR SET AS PER BULLETIN 010-014/07

HOURS: 0.70

The airbag light was as I suspected, they cleaned the connectors and reattached. Everything was covered under warranty & my car seems to be a whole lot more responsive and peppy. I don't know what it is (b/c I was only even without it for a day), but it feels GREAT.

Thanks to all who helped & those who convinced me to get her into the dealer. I will be adding another bottle of Redline on my next fill-up and all should be set. I am exiting my power-train warranty in about 100 miles, so I hope all else holds up.

I bet that the sensor pad on the gear was broken ...and not giving a proper reading to the position sensor. That would be about right to remove the APV motor...re/re the gear

Yeah, and there is no way they could replace or do any major work to the lower intake manifold in .7 hours

I got a CEL for (I think) the same thing last week.

I saw my CEL come on last week and I took it to Metrotown Mazda (Burnaby BC, Canada). They told me that the "variable intake swirl(?) valve" needed to replaced (under warranty).

According to them, there are 2 paths from intake to engine and the valve on my intake was stuck to the low-power path.

Anyway, I'm taking it in this week and they're giving me a courtesy car for the day while they fix 'er up.

Side note: I've had nothing but great experiences with Metrotown Mazda's service department for the last 2 years of 8 ownership. Naomi and Frank are great, and they have a free shuttle service that takes me to work (nearby).
