Nah I don't take offense at all. I'll try to use the spare manual key and report back. I never ever liketo turn a car on and off for a short periood of time . Like said before when pumping gas. I do know Once out stay out. I know one of the hardest things on the car is a start up. And I always ground myself afte gas starts pourin in. I don't see how it's a problem. I just don't see the reason how it's dangerous. I my dad doe it all the time in his diesel. I've seen world record attenpts involving long vehicle use an them adding gas to the boat, car, or motorcycle while driving. I don't see the harm. But I don't mind u guys shedding any light. Ugh it's late and I'm on iPhone. Damn insomnia

Oh. Cars cause sparks from static electricity build up. There's a small chance of it happening, but when it does your going to blow the entire station to hell. Just because your dad got lucky doesn't mean it's going to be the same for you, and the other innocent people you kill.

Wow you know it says right by the pump turn off engine and don't smoke but I guess its their for decorations. ..for all the people who do that that's just like pumping gas while smoking a cigarette and blowing it by the tank but worst. I see this all the time trucks, cars and so on doing it next to me and as soon as I notice I stop filing up and leave may sound stupit but one day something is really going to happen because of some fool

Your dad taught you that, than he's an idiot too.

I think diesel is less likely to flash fire though.

God damn, someone needs to start posting gifs and get this thread owned like his other threads.. I don't think I've ever seen him succeed in asking an even half-brained question.

As I've said before, I ground my self. I don't smoke at gas stations. If the cause of the explosion is stati then I'm fine. I stay out o the car untll it's finished and I ground my self...

If u guys are observant you'll notice truckers filling up while the engne is running aswell. I don't see how having the engine run while filling up makes a difference. IF it's gong to explode, it's going to explode.

No one has actually explained why this is dangerous, just flaming. If it's only static shocks, then I'm set, I ground myself.

If fumes get into your ignition while it's on it will cause a fire.

Static is a problem, but it isn't the only problem. You also have:

- Ignition source (hot exhaust piping) low to the ground if there is a spill (do a search on here about the 8 overflowing when pumping. Quite a few people have that problem, not always with warning).Turning off the car allows this to immediately begin cooling, reducing the risk that if there is a spill that the heat will cause a cumbustion. And yes, our exhaust is hot enough. That's why we get backfires and shooting flames.

- Ignition source (electrical components) throughout the car can ignite fumes. A perfect car still has a very real potential for open electricity. Most of the car's electrical power is grounded to the chassis for return to the battery, which has the entire potential of arcing at any point. This stuff degrades over time, increasing the risk significantly as time passes. Even simple stuff like a fuse not completely seated in the fuse box could be causing a constant arc that could ignite fumes. I suspect that the single biggest source of arcing is from degrading spark plug wires, where the insulation material has worn away, been cut or chipped (go look where your wires are...that isn't exactly heavily shielded from debris), and they start arcing and grounding out on nearby metal. Turning off the car stops most of this, turning off the lights and removing the key removes all but faulty battery terminals and cables.

I'm not saying that all of this WILL happen to you, but it is a risk that isn't worth taking, and the risk is very very real.

Filling up a vehicle while it is moving is a stunt move anyway (you know, with a warning that says don't try this at home), but the fact that the vehicle is moving automatically removes almost all fume problems.

You can't use Diesel as a reason to do it with gasoline here. Diesel's flashpoint is so much higher than gasoline that the concerns here are nearly impossible to reach when you are talking about diesel fuels. Of course, if you are filling up diesel at a gas station where there is gasoline around, there is still gas fumes, puddles of gas, etc...

THAT's the reason. And for your sake and the sake of your 8, I hope you stop.

If your 8 isn't warm enough, drive around until it is, or get gas farther down the road. If you are running on fumes as it is, then just idle until it's warm at the gas station (not at the pump). You can't flood it if it shuts off due to running out of gas, and if you don't run out, then well, there isn't an issue.

Not to mention drifting in the parking lot and beauty of the rx8 with the 05rex8 gif win too..

Just.. Fail less @ life plzthx.

Arguing against the points listed here are retarded, they're just the truth. If wasting 3 minutes of your time is worth your life, and the life of others, along with millions of dollars in damage, you're a moron.

The thread title is valid, it's content however is not. Locking your car with the keys in it with a valet key could be handy for morning starts without getting the car jacked perhaps. I'd stick to remote ignition however if that's your desire.

Actually, there you are wrong. If you have a GT and the FOB key, you don't have a key in the ignition. The key just needs to be present for the car to turn over. I have, on numerous times, turned on the car and locked the doors to let it warm up in my drive way while I go back to getting ready to leave, especially these days that it has been unusually cold in Texas.

Yeah, I use the key-card almost every day. So much so that the aux.key fell out into my car and got lost yesterday :'(

It works great if you live in a colder climate.

Not to mention gassing up while it is running will cause a CEL.

Just because nothing ever happened while doing this does not make it unsafe. In the Navy we had idiots who bitched about not being able to smoke on the flight deck even though we watched video after video of horrible fires on the flight deck. Fuel spills happened all the time. Zippo lighters (A.K.A. flight deck lighters) don't jut go out when they are dropped by accident.

I hate to attack people but damn man, use your head.
