Buying used track raced Rx8
Hi,
Thinking of getting a used Rx8. Have looked at various ones, some of which have been raced (and probably raced hard) on track. They all have about 20-40 k miles on them. Would it be a bad idea of buy a track raced Rx8?

LOL, who admits to racing when selling a car?
With the 8, I would worry more about low-RPM granny driving than *****-on track racing. The rotary seems to do really well under race conditions, and it's likely that anyone racing an 8 also takes good care of that 8.

Up to you, the engine may or may not be original, clutch/transmission may be worn out or near the point. Might want to check if the warranty has been voided by dealerships for the engine if it had any major mods on it. I would look the car over a lot especially on the engine for mods that would void the warranty. The racing might be decent to the engine but at the same time it does wear bearings/seals on the rotors out over time. Just be carefull. Could be more expensive down the road to take care of the engine/tran./clutch if there all worn out and out of the warranty then buying a low mileage rx8.

he's one of the forum members here actually, with some links to his races:

He seems like a nice guy and I'm going to test drive his car. I am a serious buyer, but what you guys say about wear and tear definitely makes sense. How much should I have him lower his price for wear / tear?
Also mods, besides suspension / coilover are intake and exhaust on the engine.

Interesting way to buy a car! That's skyse3p's car. I'd want to know if he uses premix, espcecially on the track ... at least when he stays on the track, LOL. May as well read all his posts here and get a sense of how well he maintains his car, etc.

I would be concerned with the clutch/tranny more than the engine or anything else. Engine needs to be run hard on occasion and im sure this guy didnt race it so often to where engine wear would be a big concern. If he was racing it hard more than 2-3 times a month then i'd be a bit more concerned about the engine.
Either way, just be sure to do your research on the previous owner, like others have suggested, and give it a good inspection prior to purchasing. GL!

Test drove Sky's car. Great car, great mods, clean ride, super nice guy as well. It's obvious he knows his car.
I ended up test driving multiple other cars that day and am going with a different car for various reasons. Anyone in LA / SD / OC, you guys should check out his ride, super nice.

Its kinda crazy, but for an Rx8, one driven by a guy who regularly red line it and used for occasional track driving is much better than one driven by a secretary who never hear the beep and only use for short trips without highways...
