Yay! New owner!
Hi all! Just got a 2006 fully loaded rx8. I've been wanting one for quite a while now and managed to pick one up in connecticut. I live in Boston so it was quite a long drive. I'm not that good at driving manual yet so I let my dad drive it back. On the way back to Boston, he said the engine light came on. We ran a code reader on it when we got back home and it came up as "p0420" which I think has something to do with emissions.....
The car has a mazdaspeed exhaust on it, but I don't think that would cause the engine light to come on. I did notice however that the exhaust does emit a strong smell. After doing a little research, I was wondering if the problem is with the catalytic converter or am I in need of a reflash??? Much appreciated if anyone could help me out! Luckily, I don't think any of this affects the drive ability, so I'm happy about that.
And I suppose I should attach a pic because I know everyone likes to see the "proof"

Grats on the car - if it's an emissions code, it's most likely the gas cap. Tighten it up and see if it goes away.
Learning stick is easy, just take about a half hour in a parking lot using only the clutch to get the car moving and you'll be confident enough to drive in no time. The hardest part is learning how the clutch works, so when you focus on only learning the hardest part without having to worry about adding throttle into the equation, things come together much more quickly.
Good luck, enjoy it, and don't be dumb!

P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold ON 2 Catalyst
So it's the cat. Which has an 80K (I think) warranty.
The evap system codes that can be caused by a loose gas cap are 0446, 0455 and 0456. CEL for those won't come on while driving - it will light as soon as you start the car.
BTW - https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/rx-8-technical-info-cel-codes-pcm-pin-list-collision-guide-26291/ is a sticky at the top of the tech forum that lists all of the codes. Very useful ref.
