the best 350 on my rx8 for the summer but I had one question

I have done this to my honda so i decided to do this to my rx8...the temp in valencia is in triple digits.. the a/c isnt the greatest and there is alot of heat coming from the engine through the floor and console... I went to see some buddies at his shop I told him about this problem and he said to get everything thermal wrapped and heat enclosed..so for $350 He wrapped the exhaust header and pretty much everything that radiated heat.. he also put heat shields below the center console and in various areas where he found that heat would radiate..he even made an extra heat shield for my gen 1 k&n intake (which sucks)..he also used the windshield washer tank flushed it and put pure water hooked a toggle switch so it will lightly spray water on my oil cooler and radiator..it took a week to do the car is now much cooler inside and has made a difference...Im going back to get my sparkplugs covered (he said there was alot of heat around them) and hose potential heat affected wires..my question was what is the best coolant for my radiator...Im going to do that job myself...

be careful on shielding things..... they were probably not designed to have heat shields..!

yeah, the heat shields will cause these parts to retain their heat, which was not the idea... it needs to dissipate. glad you're comfortable, though.

the wraps were designed to breathe the main thing was do block heat from the cabin.. the best thing i paid for was the radiator and oil cooler spray...

Those items need to vent heat. Not a good idea to insulate them. As you know, heat breaks down plastics, rubber, etc.

Wouldn't squirting cold water directly onto hot metal parts cause them to crack?

Not if they have the same degree of expansion and contraction.

Have to agree with a lot of the above. You have no idea what the engineers had in mind when designing the car. You're now playing with a lot of materials that heat can damage and you just don't know at what point this will happen. I could see heat shielding if it is not trapping the heat but when you start to insulate (wrap) various components. You could be looking at some warping and heat damage down the line.

Not something I'd ever recommend - the heat has to go somewhere ...

Remember chemistry class? Glass is not a sandwich of materials like an engine block, but all one uniform material... so tell me, when you run an empty hot glass beaker under the sink, why does is crumble like some invisible foot stomped on it?

because the spot the water drop hits contracts at a faster rate than the place where it doesnt. this causes stress that normal glass cant handle. do it to a piece of ceramic glass(like that used in a wood stove) and the glass doesnt break because the ceramic doesnt expand or contract the amount regular glass does. so there is not as much stress in the surrounding areas.

I don't see a problem with heat shielding. I like it. when it comes to wrapping exhausts, the biggest issue is with water. Header wrap has a way of trapping moisture against the pipes after it gets wet and this will lead to rust at a faster rate than normal. We aren't talking about a years time. It's a long term issue that will surface later. Stainless stell you don't want to wrap unless you are a race team that will replace those parts in time anyways. Stainless expands more than many other metals when it gets hot. The more heat it holds in, the more it expands. If you wrap it and hold in too much heat, you'll crack the welds or the pipe if the welds are too strong. It's got to expand somehow. As far as wrapping some wires, lines, cast iron exhaust manifold, instaling shields, etc... I don't see an issue with it. It's a good idea.

Put a heat shield on the sun in your area and that will solve your problem...

Thanks for the imput but when i asked my mechanic about what was said in the forum he pionted out to me that he wrapped mainly the headers and heat shielded the most of the piping..most of the piping was wrapped on a netted wrap which he says expells heat.. he also dissasembeled the center console and insulated it so that heat from the bottom of the car will not affect the cabin..the sprayers use a mist similar to a intercooler spray..I am also re-tinting my car with a reflective black tint all the way around and using a polarized metallic tint that is see through but reflects uv rays on the front windshield.. the heat is too much and i have alreay done this to my s2k.. it does help with temps inside your car

and as far as the plugs being sleeved it looks really nice and it protects from the heat coming from the engine...winning blue with red engine sleeves and wires

I don't see a problem with any of it.
