Oh also Motor.. not sure if this is just mine but I've started to notice that if I'm driving in town in Trip mode at times the shift is somewhat well violent from 1st to 2nd. I only notice it if I'm well "cruising" if you will and my revs are below 6k. If anyone else reads this and thinks this is wrong please tell me lol.. I am bringing my car in on Wed to get the new flash because at times my lil rotary idles ruff (to me atleast and its not often thankfully) and I also noted the ruff shifting at times feels like my old dodge aries tranny when it was slipping.

Again if you know manual I'd say get the MT version!!

I actually like the auto in most cars. the new Porche is faster than a stick.

Others cars are slightly slower like 1 to 3 tenths.

That's in a drag race against Pro's

My next Sports Car will be an auto as they are far superior unless you get a weak wngine like the 8 AT.

Just because they shift faster doesn't make them superior. The fastest way to get around a track in a street car is still with a good ole manual. The driving experience is also dulled by an auto no matter how good it is.

Frankly I can echo this sentiment to a certain extent, I am also intrigued by the few cars that have these gearboxes and the DSG tranny gets some rave reviews. Soon enough these racing-engineered gearboxes will be as good on the street as the racing trannies are on the track.

My understanding behind most of the transmission developments is based on materials and the cost of construction. DSG is very, very competent, and for most humans, probably a faster shift than what you could achieve with conventional manual transmission.

Sensodrive is what I'm talking about and it's garbage, the BMWs have a similar system and they roll backwards on hills too and jerk when you shift, even on the M5 from what I've heard. It's supposed to be fun, but it just pisses you off.

Hahaha.. sounds like something a Pontiac GTO owner would say. Have you seen those? They're about as bland as car styling gets.

Having a manumatic style car I can definitely vouch for the fun factor. Is it as fun as a manual? Probably not, but it's still fun -- something that I don't think manual types understand. In an automatic when you're accelerating going into a turn, as soon as you let off the gas it tends to want to upshift. With a manumatic, you can leave it in the lower gear and zoom out of the corner. Maybe seems like a small deal, but huge fun.

After having my manual driving lessons cut short due to a very badly broken hand I wonder again if it's all worth it. If I did have a stick I wouldn't be able to drive it -- for 4 months. Screw that, I gotta get to work. Sure, I don't want to miss out on the 9k redline, but at the same time, if I were looking for power, I wouldn't be looking at an 8.

Different strokes for different folks, I just wish that the manual only folks would try to see things from another perspective. And to the OP, if this car had a 6-speed automatic with 9k redline there would be absolutely no question in my head to go for the auto. But it doesn't so it's gotta make you wonder about whether this car is the right one for you.

If you really like the automatic, but with the power to shift, I know a guy who has a 2000 saturn 4 door that has D1, D2 and D! It doesn't upshift when you redline either! Amazing.

A lot of cars are out now that offer auto transmissions with a manual shift option, the purpose of which is to allow the driver to shift the car much like they could with a manual.

Do you feel the auto shift feature offered in the rx-8 allows one to drive the car like a manual or close to one? To me it seems like an auto with a shift feature still is not a manual/clutch shift setup. Maybe owners of the automatic may feel they get a 80 to 90% feeling of driving a manual shfit model due to the way it is setup in a 2006 rx-8.


Also, since the rx-8 now offers the paddle shifting on the steering wheel do you feel that enhances the 'manual shift' feel of driving compared to using the automatic stick to shift in a manual mode.
I have a better post for you to start, 4cyl VS 12cyl
