04 vs 05 - Buy the first year model?

I have done several searches, and am familiar with the general complaints, praises, etc of the RX-8. I could not seem to locate any thread specifically addressing first year problems with the 2004 (I apologize if this is a repeat).

My understanding is that the 2005 is essentially the same vehicle as the 2004, but are there any issues that would lead you to recommend paying a few extra thousand for an '05? Obviously the extra year of warranty would be a plus, but as far as quality/mechanics, any other reason?

This may upset the regular crowd on this site, but I am looking to buy an automatic RX-8 (I don't plan on racing and don't mind the lower hp, and enjoy the freedom an auto brings on daily commutes- coffee in one hand and food in the other, etc lol), and can likley get an '04 with low miles in the range of about $17k. The lowest I can find an '05 is $20k, and am trying to decide if it is worth the extra money. Thanks for any advice. I look forward to driving an RX-8 within a few months.

only difference in an auto would be between 04/05 and 06. if you really don't care, get the 04.
just fyi, just in case you didn't know... the 06 gets:
212 vs 197 hp
2 oil coolers vs 1
6 port vs 4
6 gears vs 4
good luck.

This should not be your reason for getting an automatic. Put the food, coffee, cell phone or anything else down and concentrate on driving.

I think you should not buy an RX8. Go get a Ford Focus.

Exclamation

Mazda updated the 04 & 05's with alot of the most important things. So either year would be OK. There are some good upgrades on here that you should consider. The Rotary engine makes this an Exotic car. If your first car was a rotary, that is how you would compare others. My 4th car was a Mazda rotary and this 8 is my 7th rotary. Since it is exotic the whole car was built around the Rotary engine and all of its differences. I love the differences thats why I keep asking for More and I get more each time. I have a hunch the next one will be out very soon........cant wait!!!
