Hi all!

Another topic with the fuel-pumping problem. I came up with few really old threads discussing about this problem, and this is one of the closest to my case:

So, I filled up my half-full tank this morning. After I put the pump on "auto" mode, it stops after about 2 secs! I tried like 3-4 times and it still doesn't work. I was like OK, maybe the pump, and I moved to another pump (Another shell.)

No use, same thing happens, then I tried to pump manually and it does the same thing, after I squeezed the handle for couple secs, the pump went off again. I was really confused and wonder how can I fill my gas tank. I was only managed to fill 3 gallons and it took me about 7 minutes.

I called it quit and decide to seek redemption here So, is this NoRmaL???

 

I don't think it's normal because it has never happened to me.. But uhh..

I have major problems ONLY at 76 stations.
Not only is it hard to get gas in, but it "burps up" when it is full. Causing gas to run down the paint, and many profanities to follow.

My cure was to pump slowely. Do not use the full flow, and never use the little clip that holds the pump on.

can depend on the angle of the fuel pump. Try pulling it out an inch and see.

Also try using less than full open on the pump, sometimes I can only fill at 50% or 80%

 

Anti backflow valve may be stuck partly closed.......If your under warranty take it in...if it is broken...you need a new fuel tank.....

( or you need to open the tank and free it if your not under warranty )

Mine's just out of warranty 5k miles ago I think. A new fuel tank? Damn man...
btw, how do you diagnose this valve?

 

If the gas doesn't go in properly...it might be sticky.

It is accessible through the fuel pump port in the tank I think.....It's just a flapper type valve that prevents backflow from the tank

If you are out of warranty...and it becomes a large problem...I'd pull the pump and see if you can unstick it......

Also, I wonder if cold weather has anything to do with this. Because it was just fine the last time my friend filled up my gas (I was there and sat inside.)

Never had a problem. Every time she shuts off she is at the top.

No more room for any more.

Bad gas pump or you are not using it correctly.

Your experience is abnormal.

 

I've had the exact same problem but not only at 76 stations.

I just pump by hand now and slow it down when i know its almost full.

 

Least it was shutting off for you! I was at a station and it was going really really slow and I wasn't in a hurry so I figured Id just wait it out. Next thing I know is the fuel cut off never kicked in when the car was full and gas came out and on the side of the car (was not to happy afraid it would start stripping my paint). Its a good thing that I never leave the handle while filling or I would have came back with my car in the middle of a puddle of gas. Got some napkins stuck them in my windshield washer fluid tank and used that to wipe the gas off and saved the paint.

I fill up at Union almost all the time. Still no problem.

I have a problem with my Ford Econoline but it's caused by they way you put the knozzle in the hole.

Perhaps if were to put some hair around it, things would be easier?

 

Lol so I guess I wasn't the only one here. So, how do you know the gas tank is almost full? The sound?
I've been living in the US for about 5 years now and kind of forget how it is before I used to fill my tank manually and wait for the "full" sound.

 

i think its the angle of the pump, try to lift it up or hold it up or something.

Yeah I remember when I visited a gas station in OR, this guy smiled and did it for us... it was kind of.. weird lol.

Anyway, I went to the same Shell gas station and tried different angle, flow, etc and it worked just fine! Thanks guys
