thanks for the input fuz. Another point you brought up is they always run stop signs :S. I was amazed when i saw this. Technically they are on the road and not pedestrians so why should they be allowed to run stop signs. Are motorcyclists alllowed to run stop signs ..no..... so why should they

some of them just think cars will always look for them. true, cars do let them go pass most of the time but if I am doing 50mph and you come out within 50ft in front of me, you are an idiot and dont blame me if I cant stop in time because I have the right of way.
I think bicycles should have rear view mirrors by law if they want to ride on the road. motorcycles have them and they are very important. Ive seen cyclists just mindlessly cut across two lanes without even look behind.

pretty much spot on I always laugh at the guys showing up to park for the bike trail in a MB suv and a $4k bike with all of the accessories and then they go and ride 10 miles at a super slow pace and think they're the ****. If i'm riding, i'm riding. I hate putting my bike on/in a car to go somewhere. I prefer the road of a bike trail anyday though. I only put my bike on my winter beater. My bike is worth more than the car i use to haul it

Unless it's a short leisurely ride, or i'm commuting somewhere i always where the spandex and a jersey. It looks queer as hell, but it's comfortable. The shorts have padding that that not only makes the ride more bearable but it wicks away sweat and greatly reduces chafing. a chafed ball sac is a terrible, terrible thing. In general, the outfit is designed to keep you cool (or warm with the right gear), wind resistant, and comfortable. While it doesn't seem like much, it makes a big difference on a 30, 50, 75, 100 mile ride. Sadly most of the posers you see with shorts and a jersey are like the ones i mentioned above. They've never ridden any distance. They just think it looks cool.

I wore gym shorts and a t-shirt on my first real road ride. After a 30 mile ride i was hurting. Bad. I decided then to swallow my pride and look like a douche instead of being chafed almost to the point of bleeding and unable to walk.

Exactly. I always bitch at people if I'm in a group and the do stupid ****.

Toronto cyclists is your problem. When I was younger I did a stint of work there as a bike courier. There are so many dummies on bikes and they never have to learn any rules so they just play ignorant on just about everything.
btw, I never leaned. The riders that lean have shoes with clamps on them, that either they are not familiar with how to release/clip them or just plain lazy. Urban riders should never use shoes, it's dangerous. I used toe clips in bad weather days though.

Actually, wcs, yes it is.
If cyclists had to pay for a license though, the money could be put into dedicated cycle paths.
Anywhere in the world where there are a lot of cyclists, they get priority to accessible roadways/bikeways, car commuters have to park and walk.
Be careful of what you ask for. Ever been to a downtown in Spain, Holland, Japan. No cars, but cyclists rule.

Seems to me that cyclist are already getting priority to many of those things (in the GTA) and they don't pay squat.

Been to Tokyo and Nagasaki a bunch of times.

To tell you the truth from what I remember, in both cities there is still a lot of traffic and the cyclist ride on the sidewalks along with the pedestrians.

I remember being pissed off and saying to myself thanks god bikes are not allowed on the sidewalks in Ontario.

There is also a population density thing they have that we do not.

I doubt that Canada will have this kind of problem anytime in the foreseeable future.

I can't imagine riding my bike from Orangeville to the Airport lol
There isn't even mass transit that's practical for this yet.

Reflecting on this I don't remember seeing as many cyclists as I do remembering seeing those small motorized scooters. Still saw lots and lots of cars, small cars. A few SUV's .. yup American SUV's.
Same when I was in Kuala Lumpur and the Kuantan.

I do remembering seeing a **** tonne of cyclists in Svetogorsk Russia.

I had a freckin old fart on a cycle ride off the footpath/sidewalk and collect the front of our van,put a dinner plate size dent in the hood,with his head, then he wanted ME to compensate him. Ban all cyclists unless there is a specific bike lane.

Running red lights and stop signs, not staying to the right, and no signaling: these are the reasons why motorists dislike cyclists....

Local down here had to deal with being on a convenient road for very large groups, that had several stop signs. 3 cops pulled the entire group over, like 3 times and gave them tickets for running 3 stop signs. It takes a cop several minutes to write a ticket, multiply that by 60, 3 times. Solved the running stop signs (some 4 way), running through crosswalks, terrorizing the kids riding their bikes legally, the people that wanted to use the street and overall sped up traffic.

This is the same police department that sets up speed traps near churches on Sunday morning, so it may be the money more than anything...

That road is a lot nicer on the weekend though...

This is not a cyclist problem; it's a "people who could care less about other people's property" problem.

That cyclist could just have easily been some woman placing her shopping bags on your trunk while she gets the keys to open hers. Or some guy who parks too close and flings his door open into yours, leaving a ding, and not even realizing he's done it. Or some jerk who parallel parks by repeatedly tapping the bumpers of the cars in front of and behind him, believing that's how it's done.

They're all ******** never taught to respect – or even be aware of – the property or feelings of people they don't know.

Remember, cyclists have as much right to the road as we do. In fact, they were here first. The reason roads were built in the first place was to accommodate them:

I don't think anyone has any problem respecting cyclists, as long as the respect is returned.

The other day I was going down a 45 mph road in the right hand lane and two cyclists were in front of me. This is a BUSY ROAD and they felt the need to go 2 deep in the lane so that no car could go past them even if they tried. They were also forcing traffic to go very slow in that one lane. Now there is not a bike lane on this road so IMO they should go find one WITH a bike lane and stay in it or at least a less heavily trafficked road. It just seems stupid to ride somewhere where you are putting yourself at risk.

New Yorker, I dont know if it applies to the US, here, if you are driving at a certain percentage slower than the posted limit,you are liable to be ticketed , by law. Why should this not be applied to cyclist's? Road's were initially built for horses. Not asphalt, but road's none the less.

^ Well, cyclists definitely must ride single-file when there's traffic. That's the law and it's unfortunate when cyclists ignore it.

Also, here in the states, cyclists are not supposed to take up an entire lane except for short distances in situations where they have no other choice (no shoulder, parked car pulling out). So most of the time cars and bikes share the road at different speeds without one impeding the other. Cars passing cyclists are supposed to give them 3 feet.

What this is really about is mutual respect. When I'm driving, if I signal so that cyclists riding behind me can see I'm about to enter their lane, they appreciate it. And when I'm biking and wave a car slowing down for me to just continue past, they clearly appreciate that.

It's when motorists or cyclists act as if the other isn't there that there are problems.

Man...I would have been pissed! That is such crap that he did that! I think its funny the other guy said he took off with the guys helmet lol If one did that to me I would get out of my 8, walk up to him and kick the sh*t out of his bike knocking him off of it. I would then say, "I am sorry, I was just trying to brace my foot on your ride so I could tie my shoe"

Cyclist? Respect? HAH! i HAVE ZERO FOR THEM!

Forget about them leaning on ur car. In nyc they just dodge around cars thats moving 20-30 miles an hour like they own they roads and we are actually blocking them. And there were so many accidents that these asswipes hit some poor souls on the side walk as they are trying to pass, but guess what sucks for the person who got hit by his bike cuz there is no insurance, broken leg? Too bad, u gotta pay for it on ur own. But of course local news here dont talk about it much cuz they gotta kiss bloomberg's ***...
