Heaven forbid we make engines that put out gas that vegetation feeds on!!! OHH THE HORROR OF CO2!!! Don't believe everything the government says about CO2, or the media for that matter. It's rediculous that policies are being made on false information regarding CO2 and it's effects on global warming. It's rediculous that we have to get emissions tests and that company policies are being made, sacrificing power and design because some stupid person dosen't know jack about CO2 emmisions!!!

---end rant---

If the worst thing that comes out of the whole global warming debate is faster, lighter, better cars that get better gas mileage, what's not to like. So what if we end up with cars that sacrifice a little bit of power, when all the other stuff is good.

Regarding the article on Paddock - sorry, that sounded like a bunch of marketing claptrap to me. A few choice quotes...

Mazda's primary focus will include harnessing synergies with Ford and improving the HEV system of the Hydrogen RE Hybrid - what the hell does that mean?

Mazda will research hydrogen fuel technologies, with particular emphasis on internal combustion engine applications - internal combustion hydrogen engines don't make CO2, but they still make lots of nitrogen oxides, and there's still the question of where the hydrogen is going to come from - if you think solar panels, think again - big coal has its eye on the hydrogen market!

Seeking a sustainable future transportation environment, offer vehicles that have a comfortable ride together with excellent safety features such as collision avoidance systems - it is all the safety crap that has gotten us into the situation where our vehicles are bloated in the first place! How on earth is adding more safety crap even remotely compatible with "sustainability".

Bottom line - you can have it all. Better fuel efficiency, lower emissions, better performance, more safety, and good design. Sorry, but I just don't buy it!

If the don't lick the flooding issue it still won't sell well. Most likely anythingthey make with a rotary won't sell all that well. It's too much of an unknown for people.

As I've mentioned before a small electric hybrid would do the trick, small hp gain, larger torque gain, better mileage and it could spin out fuel to avoid floods.

a hybrid rx8 would be pretty cool... all of the cool features and technology, with none of the 15-18mpg

direct injection would solve the flooding issues more or less. that seems like a good way to go, the automatic thing they claim will prolly be a DSG/ SMG/ twin clutch whateevr else ppl call it. not a cvt, this auto trans will prolly be the auto version of whatever rotary comes out next so itll be fit for a sports car. cvt is not for sports cars, twin clutch on the other hand........

Maybe a DSG/SMG powered rotary with 300hp by 2010 isn't completely unreasonable at this point.
