Yeah.. Sad but true. It seems they haven't had enough complaints or injuries reported to warrant a recall at the present time.

ShellDude and fellow Philly area member, what is your vin and what year is your car? My 2008 40th Anniversary edition RX8 , bought new in May 2008 was recalled, now just waiting for the parts. If you RX8 is a 2008 or earlier you probably should have received a recall notice from Mazda by now. If yours is after Mid 2008, then maybe you are spared the recall. Seems like from the posts here that no 2009 or later RX8s have been recalled. I am right here with that folks? correct me if I am wrong about the Series 2 RX8s being out of the recall.

It is interesting how car makers are handling this...

As I see it, the only reason the USA is priority is because car makers are Sh*t scared they will be sued (US legal system) if one of their car owners is unfortunately killed or seriously injured by a rupturing air bag inflator.

The lives of Mazda owners everywhere else in the world are not as important.

BTW: The Takata inflators used by and supplied to Mazda are identical for the Left Hand Drive cars all around the world (including Europe)..

We all complain about the lawyers, but they do provide a useful vigilante force for things like this.

Doubtful, unless what replaces it is a unit with an integrated cover : https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...-191121/page7/

As am I. Mine is a 2008. Waiting for 2nd letter. I'd like it to arrive soon so I can book my car once and get a few things looked at. Unfortunate about this back and forth with the supplier.

ShellDude. it is ALL Series 1 RX8s to get the recall. If you have a series 1 you should have already gotten the recall. Be sure your car's original dealer has your info , if you bought it new. The original dealers' owners' list are the ones Mazda is using to contact the owners. If you are the original owner, it is time to go see your dealer about this.

I'll give them a call but I'd expect to see the recall (along with all the others that are listed) on my mymazda.com Vin / vehicle page.

Takata Airbag Inflator

So I hear this thing explodes and sends metal shrapnel into the cockpit... Mazda says there are no recalls for my VIN even though I have an '07; so they've refused to do any work.

Is there a branded part that I could buy myself and have a mechanic install or preferably do it myself?

I am a new owner of a 2004 RX8 bought last month and the dealership hasn't sent me one yet. I did call them and they advised at least here in the USA that it is still being addressed in the HUMID states first before moving to me (Colorado). Has anyone in one Colorado had theirs done? I'm trying to read if its BS with the dealership as it appears all RX8's will have this done.

Secondly, if anyone had had it done, does this replace the entire unit which includes the top piece on the dashboard? My dashboard has a crack in it on 2 sides around the portion where the airbag would pop out. I assume probably from sitting in the sun for a while by the previous owner. So I was curious if when fixed through the recall if that is part of what is replaced since it seems to be all one attached unit.

I got the notice weeks ago from Mazda and I live in New Jersey, which was not one of the humid states. Still waiting on dealer notification of the parts coming in.

Others that have had the airbag replaced have reported on the forum that their cracked dash was NOT replaced. Chime in here please anyone if they DID also replace your cracked dash.

As much as we would like to, Mazda are not going to replace the cracked part of your dash if you have it...unfortunately.
Although it looks unsightly their argument I would image is it does not prevent the AB from deploying as it should.
First RX-8's are now over a decade old.

FYI to anyone interested, a little over two years ago I finally got off the dime and just ordered the part for the airbag dash cover. Don't remember cost. Replaced it myself with the workshop manual and basic tools.

My understanding is that those cracks are going to appear eventually no-matter-what if the car is predominantly parked in the sun, as my 2004 was for 7 years. That's just the way it is. Stuff deteriorates. I got over it. Now my RX-8 is parked in a garage, so I'm not as worried about it.

So which airbag are they replacing? Driver's side or passenger side? Or it depends on your VIN and location. The dealer here in Guam will only replace my driver's side because according to my VIN, that is the one that needs replacement.

For years 04-05 driver and passenger airbags, and 06-08 just driver side it sounds like.

Weak! I bought this used and it was for sure sitting in the sun from the prior owner and it cracked. I thought it was all one unit together and that the dash piece was stuck on the top of it and if replacing the whole unit then that comes off with it.

I'll look around to see if I can find the part and just replace it then. Now it parks in the garage for me so it wiull never crack like that.

So, I don't quite understand... I have a 2004 (I am not the original owner) and I called the nearest Mazda dealer and the service manager had said all recalls for my car's vin have been closed, and that the only airbag recall for the car was in 2004. Isn't it for all Series I cars?
