So it's 2-3 months for the parts for the preliminary fix on the passenger side, and 6-8 months until the permanent one?

Yep, this is what happens when there is the largest recall EVER in human history (worldwide) for TAKATA made and supplied Air Bag Inflators..

A recall of this size has never been done before, IF Mazda (MMC) was the maker of these devices I believe the fix would have been done by now, or perhaps would not have occurred.

I guess the good news is that it will be rectified.

That's good info. It does sound like they have the Southern states (Zone A) available, though.

Meanwhile I'm shitting bricks because I'm in a 12 year old car that was on a border state to Zone A for its whole life. But close to does not mean "in", so PRETTY MUCH THE IDEAL PLACE TO BE RIGHT NOW.

Dropping the car off Monday to replace the passenger side airbag, taking pictures of the dash before dropping it off to make sure they don't f*ck it up. And since I don't trust stealerships, taking a picture of the odometer just to make sure they don't go for a "joy ride".

So, picked up my 8 from the dealers today, a day late as the airbag did not get there in time. They called me yesterday to let me know about the delay, they guy actually make sure the car was left indoors overnight as we got rain last night. Just picked up the car (make sure I declined the car wash as they use brushes) and it was still as clean as I left it and it was barely driven (check the miles before and after). No scratches on the dash, and left as original.
So if you are in the WNY and need a dealer service, Northtown Mazda in Sheridan Drive is the place to go.

I'm zone B. I got my notification last week for my S2 and my dealership only needed 2 days to get the part in. The passenger dash looks fine as it did before.

I just ran the VIN for my 2006 RX-8 through that site and no air bag recalls came up. A newer fuel pump recall for the double gasket ring did, but no parts available yet. Does this mean my car doesn't need it's air bags replaced?

Your car may not have had a Takata air bag in the MY2006. Many of us do but Mazda has no line of sight on when those replacement parts (that are safe) are going to be available.

Contacted Mazda Dealer in San Jose, CA (ZONE A) for my 04, made an appointment in less than a week, replaced both bags, did not replace the cracked passenger dash cover though.

Mikebrow74 that is great. On the east coast had my 08 RX8 driver side airbag replaced earlier, but still waiting for my dealer to have the parts for the passenger side airbag replacement.

Interesting that the files Ash posted say that for example Zone B cars that are newer than 2008 will not get the recall. (age x humidity exposure determine the recall). Time will wound all heels (and destroy the airbags).

Tomorrow picking up my car.

Took it over for the issue of the clutch pedal. Since I had the letter sent to me about the air bag recall, told them about it to take care of it and avoid another visit.

They agreed, so tomorrow my car will have new air bags.

RX8 Year 2007.

Just picked up my 2009 RX-8 R3 from San Francisco Dealership, only took 3 business days for part to be delivered and installed.

Hey, guys. So I contacted the dealership here in Hawaii about recalls on the RX8. They said they can't find any info on my VIN no. I bought the car in Guam and the VIN. no is JM1FE173180214315. Then I contacted Mazda and they said the same thing that they can't find any info on the VIN. So I told them that I bought the car in Guam and they want me to call Guam to ask if they can ship the part to Hawaii. So my question now is why can't they pull any info on my VIN and why can't dealer here just change the recalled part?

Well your VIN is a definite Mazda product, so the VIN does exist.
And it is a US Spec car and is in Mazda NAO EPC.(Parts Catalog)
Therefore MNAO is responsible for ANY warranty work.
I suggest you contact them.
ANY Hawaii Dealer who is a representative of Mazda and MNAO must repair your car IF it is part of any recall.

Further to my post if you put your full vin in this nhtsa website you can see this car has 4 associated recalls.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls

So whoever you are talking to is wrong.

Not sure if the Series I and Series II airbags are interchangeable but if they are I know Hansel Mazda in Santa Rosa, CA has a spare recall airbag, might have Hawaii dealership call them and ship it out...

New Zealand has now finally joined the full recall, I received my letter yesterday informing me that both airbags need to be replaced (Mazda has already replaced the drivers side after much badgering)

Hopefully the wait won't be too long

Great to hear, it took too long ..

As you are a New Zealander I wonder 'if' you could PM me or post here your FULL VIN Number for your Mazda as it can and does help me for Genuine Mazda Parts Identification and the tracing of.
You would be surprised what can be gleamed off correct Parts Information from 100% correct VIN Numbers.

This VIN number association DOES NOT include ANY of your Personal Information or details, it is solely about the car (naked).

I hope you can trust me to do the rights by you, I use it purely for Part Number reference, I study these things, lame I know, a Global EPC is a good read...lol... but it helps to work out issues.
Cheers

Ash
