I just had my airbag replaced, and a week later it rained quite a bit. Now the floormat in the driver's side footwell is completely soaked with water. Could this have been caused by the airbag replacement? What exactly did they take apart to replace the airbag? I've never had an issue with water getting inside before. No sunroof, 2006 MT.

Both sides, not just passenger.

NBC News is reporting that NHTSA will require five auto makers (including Mazda) to replace both sides, in all states. Not just the limited high humidity areas. Apparently there was something off in the explosive mix used by Takata.

With both sides at risk, I'm now in a quandary. When it was just the passenger side, I was planning on offering Ralph Nader a lift whenever he wanted. I guess now I should just offer to lend him the car.

Like I said before, from past experience, the initial recall would just be the tip of the iceberg. Now perhaps they will do what should have been done years ago, recall all these airbags in all states. In a free society, a free media is sometimes our best friend to help uncover these issues and tragedies ,and help spur action to protect the consumer, rather than just wait for the businessmen to get around to fixing anything that would cost them any money.

This was never about any panicked knee-jerk reaction, it was about doing the right thing from the beginning. No fellow drivers, and that includes our RX8 family should have to worry about a supposedly life-saving device, actually harming or killing them or their passenger. I don't fault the automakers on this one, though they have enough sorry and tragic history of fault on many recalls. They thought here they were using a safe, reliable product from the top manufacturer. The questions that will be battled out in the myriad of injury and death lawsuits already filed ,will be when did they know it was a problem and why it took so long to address. The NHTSA shares some responsibility here too as they were too slow to act, and initially acted halfway as usual. Like most government regulatory bodies, they are still too much in bed with the very industries they are supposed to regulate.

Remember the poisoned Tylenol back in the early 1980s? A nut in Chicago was adding cyanide to bottles in drug stores, but the limited scope wasn't know at first. Johnson and Johnson wound up as heroes - and ultimately reaped trust and profits - by doing a full-bore recall and getting assistance from the press to get the word out.

Businesses didn't seem to learn from that. I think J&J even blew it in another problem a few years ago.

Honda announced that they'll follow NHTSA's latest announcement. But they're not going to send recall notices out to everyone. Honda owners have to know about it, and contact dealers. Another job for the press. And I suspect Honda won't actively court them the way J&J did in the 80s.

Ironically I actually shot photos for Newsweek magazine for the Tylenol incident. I shot the last photos allowed on the Tylenol product line at McNeil labs outside Philadelphia and I shot the Tylenol being removed from the shelves at drug stores. Got four shots published in Newsweek that week.

I guess if Honda won't send out notices then maybe Mazda may not either. I will check with my dealer about that. Thanks Ken-X8 for keeping us posted.

That's pretty cool, to have shot those.

I'm getting all my information from the media. Mostly from NBC Nightly News. I've been a Brian Williams fan ever since he referred to the reflecting pool in DC as the "ceement pond."

Honda is pretty newsworthy on this because they've been accused of conspiring with Takata to cover up the problem.

I'll just ask my dealer about Mazda's position the next time I go in for an oil change.

Takata maker of these airbags has refused the NHTSA's order to issue a nationwide recall of their airbags, citing replacement airbag assembly costs. NHTSA is now going after the automakers to get this now nationwide recall done. Takata is already facing multiple class action suits and being investigated by the NHTSA. As usual money comes before safety. Already there has been a death from this airbag shrapnel in a NON humid state (Arizona). In this tragic case, the car owner got a recall notice months too late. Just another example of why this should have been done years before. Takata and Honda are being investigated for trying to suppress the facts and the recall.

So far the only official realls are the regional ones. NHTSA is calling for a nationwide recall, and threatening to invoke it themselves if the automakers don't do it voluntarily. The closest any automaker has come to that is Honda, who says they'll replace the detonators for anyone who comes and asks. But they're not sending out letters beyond the humid regions.

Honda admits failing to report deaths, injuries

Honda now admits to years of withholding injuries and deaths it knew were caused by the faulty equipment, including Takata airbags.

Legot, as per your advice, a pint would be nice, just don't drive to that Winchester bar with your 2004-2007 Takata airbag RX8.

Air Bag Recall has been expanded to more high-humidity States in USA...

Washington — Mazda Motor Co. said Thursday it will recall another 40,000 vehicles in an expanded number of high-humidity states because of Takata passenger air bags that can explode. The recall came a day after Chrysler Group LLC and Ford Motor Co. announced expanded callbacks.

The models include the 2003-2007 Mazda6, 2004-2008 RX-8, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004-2005 MPV, and 2004 B-Series Trucks registered in Florida and Hawaii.
Today it was expanded to include Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and Alabama.
PLUS Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa, US Virgin Islands.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been pressuring automakers to expand the population of vehicles in the regional passenger air bag recalls from beyond Florida, Hawaii and warm weather U.S. territories after Takata on Nov. 10 expanded the zone of high humidity areas to Georgia. Alabama; Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Previously, Mazda said it was recalling about 44,000 vehicles in the United States and 2,600 in Puerto Rico. The new total is about 86,773.

My recall service is scheduled for Monday morning. They said I could drop the car off and they will provide me with a car to drive while they perform the service.

Did you get a recall notice, or just contact them and say you wanted it?
