including 14,794 in North America
From the date range in question, it is likely to be 2004s, with possibly some 2005s.

Advice has changed December 2014, Please read first post in this thread...

They finally posted the information:

Mazda USA Media - News

2004-2008 MY RX-8 built from April 23, 2003, through July 26, 2007

That should be all of the 2004-2007 models, plus a few early 2008 models.

This is going to be a regional recall only affecting:

Approximately 34,600 vehicles that were originally sold or are currently registered in Florida, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are affected.

My VIN falls into the first block. 2nd owner ... Original owner rolled it off the lot about 20 miles from my home.

actually other newer articles say the Mazda RX8s affected may include all those built through late 2007 (so some early sold 2008s may be included) I talked with my dealer and they say Mazda will promptly notify RX8 owners whose cars fall under the recall. I am waiting for the word on my 2008 40th Anniversary edition RX8,purchased in May 2008.

repost merged with existing thread. GWilliams, affected models are listed above. Yours most likely wouldn't be due to being in NJ.

I'm questioning the validity of the thread title.

Appears to be broader than the states listed.

I'm more than happy to change the title, though Mazda's official press release specifically uses that reference:

Mazda USA Media - News
Approximately 34,600 vehicles that were originally sold or are currently registered in Florida, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are affected.

RIWWP The recall is talking about cars in humid climates, which makes the chances of the failed airbag propellant more probable (it can explode without warning, sending shrapnel into the cabin) . However if you drive a lot in humid states, like I do, you could have the same problem even if your home state isn't so humid. I brought this exact factor up with my local Mazda dealer and I will be asking for airbag replacement if the built dates include mine.

Understood. It's a good argument to make, but that is between you and Mazda. Just pointing out that you wont get a letter unless they expand it.

And the VIN ranges are posted above.

This particular recall only concerns "2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, and equipped with Takata-brand air bag inflators". That is all. There is nothing official published for Canada yet.

See NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 14V344000

The official government notice is here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/...tsa_ids=14V344

That is all at this time.

Interesting, Honda seems to understand that there are more humid states than just Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. Are Mazdas immune to the humidity in all other states ?? I spend a lot of time in my RX8 in S.C., Georgia, but I live in New Jersey so i probably won't get the letter, but I intend to have this out with the dealer.

(Quote from announcement) • Regional recalls in the U.S. by Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota, BMW, Ford and Chrysler of certain vehicles in humid climates. NHTSA estimates that 1.5 million vehicles could be affected — the totals and lists of vehicles still were being compiled.

All were recalling vehicles Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. Honda said it would do so in 10 states and territories, adding Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

NHTSA said it was continuing to investigate the problem.

is your vin even in the affected range? if not, you wouldn't have had an airbag in the potentially faulty batch.

I'm guessing folks haven't been to the midwest from June through September.... nope no humidity here, unless you count 80+%..

Yes my vin on my 2008 40th Anniversary RX8 it is in the same final batch and just a few hundred from the vin numbers posted so I don't know if they just aren't counting any vins from outside Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico.

As a professional journalist for decades, I have covered cases where the initial recalls didn't go far enough and others got injured or killed until the full scope of the problem was addressed. The car manufacturers and component suppliers want to limit their costs associated with any recall and they will do the minimum until the NHTSA forces them to do more.

Cool

Does the replacement only replace the airbag or the whole assembly. In other words would this benefit those with cracked passenger air bag dashes?

If anyone wants to know their actual 'build date' (when your RX-8 was made in Hiroshima, the month/day/year) either post the Full VIN # here, or PM me with the Full VIN #...

Has anyone had their air bag replaced by the dealership yet?

I just confirmed that my 2007 is among the affected, but when I called my local dealer, they said no.

My VIN is in the range listed, and I live in Florida..

Perhaps the dealer just doesn't know about it yet..?
